For all those whizz kids who think SurAlan's Apprentoid series puts people under pressure had better watch this new series and realise just what a set of lightweight know bugger-alls they really are..

It's been 30 years since THE Submarine Commander's course was last on TV.

The infamous 'Perisher.'

Acknowledged as the toughest officer training... :Clarkson: In... the... woooorrld! :/Clarkson:

Starts next week on
Military History channel Sky 531. Virgin 236.

How to Command a Nuclear Sub

Recommended, and the last thread I started recommending you watch something was called "The Wire."

Looking forward to this, should be good. I think I read somewhere that to fail the Perisher meant never stepping foot on a boat again... Tom Clancy did an interesting factual piece of work on the course, and noted that whilst our American candidates complete courses that find he best technically qualified captains, the RN concentrates on providing the next generation of 'Nelson' - quite different in approaches..!

Sounds like a great series.

So if you fail this course your naval career is over?

So is the course to be a surface vessel Captain is less stringent?

Shameless bump and reminder.

Kicks off in half an hour, repeated at 9pm.

Same everyday this week.

Bugger I have neither sky or virgin.

Interesting perisher fact though. It's st or bust. Once you put yourself forward for it, if you fail, that's it you're out. You need some big stones and a lot of confidence to do it.

I hope it was filmed on the course where the teacher allowed Traf to hit the underwater pinacle off Sky. Now that would be worth getting sky for hehe

I'll be honest, I'm sky+-ing it, so I can watch all five programmes in one hit, really savour the pressure.

While I'm waiting for it to surface online I managed to find the 1985 original documentary, which is bloody excellent, thanks for the tip off!

Can anyone provide the link to part 2? All the links I can find on the web are dead.

Am I alone in having missed Ep 5? The Sky + link caught 1-4 but not the last one. Doh! Can't see it on again in the next week either....

I think that's a misprint. They only declared 4 episodes, yet as you say Sky shows 1-4 of 5. But like you when I noticed I had up to 4 of 5 and not 5 there was a lot of blaspheming at murdoch, Sky and anyone involved in the desgign of the sky+ player.

The whole series was repeated last weekend on Sunday back to back and there were only 4 episodes. Hope that settles your mind.

I've still not watched any of it so please don't spoil my day by anyone saying they've watched ep4 and there is a follow up episode. grrrr.

Still waiting for that link to the old series if somebody found it, would be handy just for the memories.

Cheers - I missed Ep 1 on Monday so I caught them all again when they showed them in a row on Sunday. I did notice that there were only 4, but 5 were listed, and so assumed that Ep 5 must be going out this week.

Bloody Sky info box!
