Well part of one, it's the ex-Marham Victor simulator that uses the cockpit section and huge amount of electricity.

Currently based at the Yorkshire Air Museum.

I wonder what happened to the Wessex Simulator at Shawbury?

You could sneak into the simulator room whilst a crew was using it, crawl past the cockpit unseen and then start initiating some emergencies....

They then put a lock on the door to stop us errant crewmen....which just meant that the Squadron Secretary had more cockpit time than most of the pilots....

God, as an Air Cadet back in the 70's I actually "flew" that simulator, on a summer camp at Marham. I did the take off, and flew out over the Wash, before handing over command to another SNCO sat in the right hand seat. He then managed to dump us all in the North Sea !

Happy days, and a great find. Wonder if I could get away with it without the wife noticing.

Corporal Simpo CCF (retd) has a distinct memory of a simulator 'somewhere in East Anglia' which drew its landscape information from a very larger vertical board with model trees and hedges on it, and a small camera on a stick that 'flew' over the terrain!

Thats right .. I worked with a guy that had some involvment with that system. Two old gus being paid to make tree's all day.
Apparently the worst thing was for the pilot to be flying along and come across a 50ft spider .... often causing them to 'crash' and damage the camera.

The solution was to draw some cross hairs on the lens and the pilots then chased the spiders.

Staff Cadet and Flight Sergeant Tezzer (399 Beverley Sqn) ret'd has a similar memory of said camera !

Amazing what little things we remember when pressed. Got a picture of us all sitting under a Valiant gate guardian at Marham that year ! Often come across it and have a little smile !

Anything actually on the lens wouldn't work due to focus issues but it's a nice idea.

We had our photo taken by a Victor tanker at Marham - must have been 1976-77; sadly it was never circulated and I've never seen a copy.

So the big board was Marham then? We also visited Wattisham, Woodbridge and Lakenheath so it might have been any of those. Did you meet the happy guy who handled the dogs at Marham?

Not that I remember, but we had a camp at Newton, near Nottingham one year, no flying but a whole load of dog trainers ! Wow !

Camps I did, from memory were :-

Catterick
Marham
Wittering
Luqa (Malta)
Newton

as well as weekend camps at leconfield (3 miles from home base), and Linton for my gliding school.

Air experience flights were usually from Linton, Church Fenton or Finningley.

When of course we HAD an Air force!
