Tyre advice for an early 70's BMW CSI please.

Does anyone know what tyres were originally fitted to an early 70's CSI? Recommendations for what is the best rubber now?

Any help plus best source of recommendation appreciated. Posting on behalf of a friend who lives in London.

NB: He has looked in brochure and manual without luck.

Would this be on Metric tyres?
