Well it does in Lincolnshire!

My wife filled in an on line form yesterday about the pot hole along the road that our house is on.
It's a rural area so not a big priority but they were just getting bigger.

This morning the LA had a man & lorry out filling in the pot holes.

Most councils set aside a budget to repair problem pot-holes etc ..... you can also make a claim against the council if any damaged is caused to your car, photgraphic proof of the pothole and damage are needed though.

Mate of mine hit a large pothole in his Elise, knackered a rear shocker (£300 to replace the pair doing it himself). Council ripped the road up the day after and relaid it so proof has disappeared.

No offence but have you tried reporting them?

I use the FixMyStreet app on my phone if I come across one that's likely to cause damage to a car - I've only reported 2 but both have been fixed within 2 weeks while others I'm aware of but haven't mentioned are still there. I think they are more likely to repair them if reported in case someone tries to claim against them for damage.

Am I right in thinking if it's not been reported you can't claim for damages. You can only claim for damages 30 days after it's been reported and they've not fixed it in those 30 days?

We've got the olympics coming to box hill and they seem to think the roads are fine... "what pot holes?" they say... I was hoping for a nice smooth Tarmac road due to the olymics... Guess not!!

It doesn't work if the people fixing them are a bunch of pie keys. They filled in one of the craters I have to dodge on the way to the shops only for it to appear again a couple of weeks later.

I think the link given above to fix my street will tell you if the problem has been reported.

I don't think you can't complain about the pot holes if you don't report them, how else do you think the councils will get to know about them? They don't have teams of people driving round looking for pot holes.

I reported a shocking bit of road near my brothers work, its not got any massive pot holes, smaller ones but alot.. Its the main route into and out of Guildford, their reply;

"The road is in ok condition and does not get used frequently."

Useless.

You cant complain if you dont report them? I didnt realise we were the ones responsible for the upkeep of our roads. Usually if something is my responsibility to be taken care of I make sure I am checking/looking after it.

Surely they should have teams of people driving round looking for potholes and then when they find them (which would be very regularly), they can fix them. This is what we do when maintaining the M40 so why should anywhere else be any different. If this is not happening it is little wonder the roads are in such a terrible state.

Most roads need resurfacing not patching up.

I know I know! The councils have no money, if they resurfaced the roads they would not be able to fly to all the European towns they are twinned with for a week to see how they are dealing with the credit crunch. So its just crazy talk.

This - The local council round here (Carlisle) have been "patching" the potholes on Newtown Road on and off over the last 2-3 years. By "patching," I mean "chucking a bit of tarmac in and stamping it down, then let people drive on it." This useless approach means that the "patch" lasts all of about 2 days! They need to just cut their losses and resurface it.

No, it's your not responsible for the upkeep but it's not a difficult task to help the one's that are.

Sorry, but I have been talking about rural roads in Lincolnshire not major motorways.
On that note why can't the police/traffic wombles report the state of the M40?
Or do you really want your council tax spent on people driving round all day? wink

What do you mean the police/hato report the state of the m40? It is constantly monitored and action taken when found, have you seen something amiss?

And yes i would like my council tax and road tax spent on people driving around all day finding potholes and fixing them, of course i would. They drive out of the depot with all the correct pothole repair kit, they see a pothole they repair it, they then drive on a few yards or at most a mile or 2 and stop and fix another and them repeat the process. Why would you not want that to happen?

It works in Dorset:

Every one I've reported has been repaired within a week or so.

I use this site as well - and have had great results.

I think the thing that counts is that there's then an easy public record that they've been reported... so the fear of claims escalates and action is spurred.

Never really bothered before, but with all the tax we pay (especially with fuel prices going up) I find myself less tolerant of potholes and now report decent sized ones as a matter of course.
