When picking up my gearbox from repair today the guy showed me some metal covers that you put over the gearbox end of the driveshaft to keep the grease in the CV joint and not in the gearbox coupling flange. Seemed like a good idea to me.
Anybody have experience of these?

If you mean to cover the joint when not being used.

We use rubber gloves.

I think Mark is referring to a metal plate that fits in the flange joint when bolted up.
This would stop all your precious grease sitting doing nothing in the cavity in the gearbox flange.

Thinking further on this if the plate/shim/cover were made of a softish material it may solve the grease leakage problem some owners suffer.

Yes, that is a good idea. I have never had a problem until recently, I have noticed a spray pattern on the adapter plate on one side, and it does not appear to be in line with the rubber boot, and that shows no signs of damage.

Thank you Steve.
I use plastic bags by the way. When you take your gearbox off as often as I have recently you run out of gloves!
Yes that is correct only trouble is thy are cupped a bit to follow the shape of the gearbox flange and would therefore interfere with the speedo trigger wheel unless it was cut to suit.
If they could be made to fit it would make taking the gearbox out a whole lot cleaner! They are std fit on a Porsche.

Try running a very small bead of silicon aroung the rim of each flange - this stopped the problem on mine and was still quite easy to disassemble.

this plate covers the exposed end of the cv joint. It not only keeps the grease in the cv joint where it should be and not in the gearbox flange but also keeps the open end of the cv joint covered when you take it off so making the job much easier. However trigger wheel needs modifying

As you can see I hope trigger wheel/s need to be modded to fit this but once in place driveshaft removal should be a whole lot cleaner. I guess that you can get them for the outer end as well

I wonder if the Factory offer them as I would think they could get them made cheaper than buying from Porsche?

I expect they are made by whoever makes the cv joints. They are after all a std part of it under normal circumstances. Can't understand why they are not offered with a speedo trigger wheel with a larger inside diameter.
