How many bands have come and gone, and are still with us, for that matter, that have truly just done one good album?

By that I mean one album that is in effect a greatest hits without it being a compilation, or an album that they suddenly produced after years of bits and pieces, then did nothing of it's like again.

The albums I'm thinking of especially are Eliminator by ZZ Top, Bat out of Hell by Meatloaf and Live and Dangerous by Thin Lizzy.

Early ZZ Top albums had one or two good tracks, with the rest pretty duff IMHO, then BANG! a whole album full of good stuff, then it all started to trail off again.

Discuss if you like, or provide your own suggestions.

good topic.

I could say hysteria by def leppard, albums after it have been pale by comparison. superbly produced and despite joe elliot sounding like he's from LA rather than sheffield there isn't a duff track on it. (pyromania is excellent too mind)

Keep the Faith by bon jovi - honestly, this was the last time they rocked.

Velvet Revolver - Contraband

IMO the best album ever made - the follow up (Libertad) wasn't a patch on it - no idea if they are planning of doing more/touring etc. - have kind of lost track, but Contraband is still one of the few albums that I will put on and let it play from start to finish before starting at track 1 again.

+1 for Contraband - love that album.

Depeche Mode - Violator
The Killers - Hot Fuss
The Cure - Disintegration
The Cult - Sonic Temple

Maybe not the last time they rocked but it was definately the only album of theirs that was consistantly good throughout.

Blimey! I thought I was the only person in the world who realised what a truly brilliant album this is. I've loved it ever since it came out. Sounds as fresh today as it did 35 years ago.

True enough. Great album, not listened to it for ages but will tomorrow.

Also, am I alone in thinking Pixies only ever did one great album, and I mean ALL of it with Surfa Rosa ?
