Castrol GTX & Magnetec only £10/4L at Asda

Seems like a bargain, it's usually £20+ I need to do an oil change on the Griff, never used Magnetec before, anyone had any experience?

Only problem was my local Asda were out of stock of Magnetec, only had Standard GTX.

Maybe a 50/50 mix with some cheap 20/50 would be good to bed my cam in and the initial run in period.

Its cheap for a reason...put something decent in your engine it was last much longer if you put decent quality oil in it.
I believe mineral oil is the best for bedding in a new engine Derek.

Dont do it .. use millers CRO.

Also heard its a good idea to 'squirt' some oil up the oil filter hole before filling the filter and fitting to help prime the serp pump.

Used to pack the old stylee pumps with vaseline back in the day

What's wrong with Castrol GTX or Magnatec..? Thought these were towards the more expensive end of the oil spectrum..?

So does many other indys like dreadnought and i used it for 3 years in my Chim with no issues at all, its a good quaility oil.

Not convinced. TVR Power make the use of a semi synth oil a condition of the warranty on the speed Six. In fact I spoke to Dom about it, and as others have said he uses magnatec. You would be hard pushed to suggest that Dom doesnt know what he is talking about. He has seen inside more TVR engines than just about anyone.

RV8' engines were designed and built with mineral oils in mind

I was always under the impression that these are just basic semi synthetic oils, and fully synthetic of the right viscosity is far better for the prolonged life of a high performance engine...and oil has moved on a long way from 1950's mineral oil

You need to check out the zddp in what ever oil you are going use castrol gtx and magnetec have low levels of zddp , there are a few on the market but check out millers oils web site the best one ive seen is scc 20/60 this has high content zddp anti scuffing agent in it and is recomended for all flat tappet camshaft engines i would not use magnatec 10/40 or gtx or mobil 1 or any modern low viscosity fuel saving oils they are not recomended for any TVR
engines .

I've always been of the opinion that GTX and especially magnatec is a fair quality oil. Plenty use it without issue.

For engine that have a very high state of tune - then there are better oils, such as

Silkolene PRO R 15w-50 or Silkolene PRO S 10w-50
Motul 300V 15w-50
Mobil1 15w-50

Used Magnatec for a while and now stopped as consumption was a problem. Gone back to Valvoline VR1 now I've found another local stockist.

Castrol Edge Sport 10W-60 fully synthetic engine oil works well for me, best pressure and temps ive had so far
