Trainee GM post
Discussion
Hi there,
I was looking for a bit of friendly advice and though this may be the place for it!
I have just submitted my C.V. for a position as a trainee GM for a large company in the leisure industry.
I am currently employed in a surveying / project management role in a construction company. Im not really enjoying the job, mainly because some of the prehistoric methods of procurement with a blame / cover your arse attitude that the construction (at least, the smaller scale part) industry seems to have.
The trainee GM job has significantly better pay and benifits that my current position and i cannot see my wages increasing in my current job any time soon!
Does anyone here have experience in working as a General Manager within the leisure industry? Where can i expect to be in 5, 10, 20 years ect? And also, is it likely that if i chose to in the future, my experience gained in this post may be transferrable to other industries?
FYI im a male in my 20's with a degree in quantity surveying and 4 years experience.

You've chosen a high turnover low paid industry. However, it should allow you to get some experience in a low threat environment. But being low threat means it will not have a huge impact on your cv. For impact you need to have one of the FTSE 250s, or better still, FTSE 100, on your cv. Happy to look over cv and give a few suggestions if that would help.
