306 diesel - why is the service interval so small?
Discussion
My 1.9D shed is allegedly supposed to have the oil done every 5k, which at 450 miles a week is rather frequent. When I bought it the service indicator was on, I promptly ran it for 10k miles before "treating" it to an oil change, now as the service counter ticks down (reckons another 1300 miles to go IIRC) I'm begining to ponder what I'll do when it hits zero. As the car only cost me £100 I'm pretty inclined to run it for at least another 5k before I think about changing the oil again. Am I mad?
An oil change takes 20 mins and you can have a quick look over the engine etc whilst it's draining. It might be the difference between 100k in engine life, and a small factor of MPG, too. Wouldn't you feel better hurtling down the motorway at 80mph in a car you knew was reasonably healthy?
I have a 22 year old Astra on 207k and it doesn't get treated gently. It does get fresh oil every 3-4k and coolant every couple years though.

The XUD in the 306 is a very robust engine and will go on for years on old oil.
That said, it doesn't need fancy oil and a filter will only be a couple of pounds from a motor factors so changing the oil isn't going to break the bank.
Some older turbodiesels will get noticably more sluggish if the oil is getting old but you don't have a turbo, so don't worry about that.
Given it's a £100 car, I doubt leaving it for 10,000 miles will do it any harm

...sometimes oil changes are recommended less frequently by manufacturers to reduce the inclusive lease costs?
Nail. Head. My understanding from spending too much time with petrol heads is that oil really should be changed every 5k. My Omega has 10k service intervals and as its just an old shed thats all it gets. TVR gets an oil change every 4-5k , Golf V5 every 5 as it does a lot of short trips.I just checked this out as I have a Peugeot 306 service history book in my filing cabinet and was rewarded by the karma gods.
In 1999 Peugeot re-evaluated it's service intervals. A 1997 GTI-6 requires a service every 12k, my 1999 T reg needs one every 20k. No change physically to the car, they just decided to change the intervals
According to my service book, a 1999 1.9 diesel requires a service at 2 years or 10,000 miles.
As I said, the Karma gods have rewarded me for checking this as trapped in my old Pug service book was a set of Bose headphones that I'd assumed I'd left on the train.
Winner all round

But have you seen the price of the Castrol Edge they recommend for it?
Any 507.00 oil is dear. My Lancer had a VW diesel in it, so needed 507.00, but it was on a 12,500 interval. Think it was £70 trade prices for the oil and filter change (Fuchs oil and Mitsubishi filter). One of the many reasons the Lancer was sold and replaced by a s
