Hearth for woodburner

Store we are buying from only supplies granite. We need 2 pieces 1050x355 and 1345x485 for which we have been quoted:

Granite £450.00
Quartz resin £645.00

However, we are looking for something slightly off white to go with the marble fireplace in the neighbouring room. Something like this would be good:



Due to the heat of a solid fuel fire marble isn't suitable we are told. But then I've found that the burner we're buying is "an approved stove which can stand on a 12mm thick superimposed hearth. The temperature beneath a stove dictates the thickness of hearth required - stoves that have been tested and approved not to exceed 100° centigrade underneath can stand on a 12mm thick superimposed hearth". Not sure if this now means marble would be an option again?!

Anyone else have any other experience / suggestions of where we can look.

Mine is an approved stove and the slate hearth hardly gets warm at all. I got the slate from Manthorpe slate. They do other stone too and were very good for advice.

There is a chap on e-bay who makes reconsituted stone fireplaces.

Did a hearth for my mum a while ago, looks like York stone.

Cost was about £90 ex works.

Our granite hearth cost £140 from a place in Alcester. Made to measure, but it is plain rectangular. Most of the cost is in the labour, so if you have a complex shape or edging, that pushed the cost up.

Only agglomerate/conglomerate marble cannot be used, natural marble is fine. If heat is still going to be an issue, the hearth may be supplied "slabbed" by cementing 2 or 3 pieces together to give the hearth heat expansion joints so there is no chance of cracking if it gets too hot.

Think about cleaning though, light coloured marble such as Estremoz or limestone will get dirty with ash over time, try and go for a polished marble/granite rather than honed, the polish will make it less porous.

I picked up my hearth from Manthorpe about 7 months ago, still looks nice now. They even did a little dimsion change f.o.c. The chap I dealt with is a go kart racer, I spent longer talking about his karts than the hearth..
