LPG on big engined cars.....
Discussion
Worth it?
After giving the search button a prod I read on here about someone who'd just gassed a BMW. He seemed a bit disappointed at the drop in MPG according to the dash computer, dropping between 10 and 15%.
Another poster came up with the cost per mile for petrol and cpm for LPG and it worked out quite a lot less for LPG as you would expect .
Now, I’ve got a V8 Discovery 1 that I considered gassing but after some quotes, decided not to throw nearly 2.5k at it. Mrs Glebitts owns a Focus which isn’t big enough for all of us but the Disco is too expensive to run everyday, so, we have a cunning plan. Get rid of both and buy a newer Discovery.
I’ve been asking around and scratching my head about what to look for though, Diesel or petrol. I’ve had a Td5 in a 90, so I know what they’re like and I’ve had a Series 2 Discovery V8 which I had converted to LPG (a looooooong time ago). I can’t remember much about it other than the ‘then’ Mrs Glebitts got peed off with filling it up nearly twice a week.
I did the sums and with an LPG MPG figure of around 12 @ 70ppl and around 28 for the diesel @ 135 ppl, there seems little point in going for the petrol? Am I missing something?
I suppose if you really ‘want’ a petrol then you are saving roughly half each time you fill up but if you’re not bothered about the Diesel clatter, would you bother?
A Polish mate told me that there are so many LPG’d cars over there but they are mostly small engine and the savings are huge, but he thinks the bigger the engine, the less savings you make.
I’m confusing myself trying to save pennies on fuel (of either kind), so if you can give a definitive answer, have a virtual beer token.
I know the V8 will be the choice of most BTW but I’m having to be sensible for once.
Cheers.

Only get one that is already converted if all the paperwork is still with it, otherwise insurers will bargepole you.

I own 8 lpg converted cars and vans and never ever any insurer asked for a certificate.
