Shopping for a used XFR
Discussion
Hello all
This Friday I'm going to be test driving a couple of XFR's, an 09 reg and a 59, each on for low £40's. I have around £45k to spend which should be able to find me in a 10-reg with around 6k miles judging from Autotrader.
Provided I like the car, I can see that the dealer network in question has a couple of suitable 10-reg cars at other branches (further away than I'd like to drive to myself, unfortunately), on offer for around £47k.
I've never car shopped at this level before and was wondering if any of you kind peeps had any idea of the level of discounts that should be achievable? In my mind, I'm hoping to get at least £1k off the asking price - on what is a very thirsty car in the current climate should I be able to achieve more than this?
All advice gratefully received ;-)
Anything else in particular I should be looking out for?
Bob

You should easily get that. When I went to buy my M5 it was at the dealers for £41k and I paid £37k by making an offer and starting to walk away.
By the way I took the XFR out when I changed the M5, it was a brilliant car but I didnt buy one for a couple of reasons;
1) It was as 'raw' as the M5, it was all too civil
2) I worry a little about brand new cars, have the bugs been ironed out?
3) The looks are quite mild
But the sound and the drive were good.

I would think a minimum of £5k off should be your starting point. These are not easy cars to sell and the dealers will be getting anxious with the recent petrol increases.
Make a firm offer on each car then walk away and tell each dealer that you are offering on another car and that you will buy from the first one to accept.
This lets them know you are serious and also that you know whats available on the market.
Has always worked for me.
Also what does it matter where the car is ? You know what they look like and you are buying from a main dealer.
I've bought my last three cars unseen from various parts of the country. Two of them were used.
Take a train and go and collect or get it delivered.

Make sure the car you get has the B&W hifi upgrade and the parking camera (most do but they are options so do check)
Otherwise - bargain hard but don't forget to enjoy the experience
The XF had been out a while before the XFR was launched so no early bugs to avoid - buy on price and condition
You will feel like a million dollars when you first pull away from the garage in your "new" XFR - still really enjoy mine after 18 months with no plans to sell (and I ofter get bored with cars after 18 months)

I have to say that from a dealers point of view some of the broad-brush comments in terms of discount / dealing level are a bit miss-leading.
If a car is priced fairly and cheaper than other similar age / spec /mileage cars the idea that you can just offer £5k under the asking price is a bit crazy....
I would love to have £5k+ profit on used cars, but if that was the case then no-one would pick up the phone or come to see it would they?
Surely the thing to do is go on to the Approved Used Jaguar website, filter down to what you want in terms of colours, age, mileage etc and ring the cheapest say 3 or 5 and and take it from there?
I really dont want to sound confrontational but just think that some (hopefully) rational comments from a dealers point of view would be worthwhile.
(by the way, no I dont have any used XFR's in stock so no under lying motive here :-) )

I can only post from my personal experience and I change my car every twelve months or less. If a car is priced fairly and cheaper than other similar age / spec /mileage cars the idea that you can just offer £5k under the asking price is a bit crazy....

I got almost 5k off my S type R demo from my local Jaguar main dealer (obviously a few years ago)
I got £3k off my XF diesel portfolio (demo) less than 2 years ago from a Jaguar main dealer
I got £4k off my Audi A5 new car less than three years ago
I got £4k off my present car a VW Scirroco type R (demo) less than a year ago.
My experience is that demonstrators or quite new cars are frequently advertised at optimistic prices and are easily discounted.
The What car target price for the XFR is £6k below list so what does that tell you.
This a a fabulous car but in the present financial climate they are not easy to sell and will be heavily discounted.
I say follow the advice to shortlist from the approved dealers and then offer as I have suggested.
Please keep us advised how it works out.
Thanks for all the advice. It seems that I can at least up the potential in my mind for a nice discount!
Will be sure to report back later - am certainly looking forward to the test-drives. Hopefully it will live up to expectations, although I have certainly not heard anything to suggest otherwise.

I agree with Ashley. If, for example, you are looking at one of the lowest priced XFRs around, why should the dealer discount it further, even if he has £5k in it (which is very unlikely these days, unless the car is freshly registered as a demonstrator or has been bought in)?I'd expect no more than £2,000 off of an ex-demo car if it has been priced correctly in the first place.
If you are looking at a previously owned XFR then I expect that the dealer will have started with £4-6000 margin in it and it depends on how long it has been in stock as to how much of that margin is left in the current price and how pressured he is to sell it.
Had a drive in the XFR yesterday and, as expected, it is a very nice car. Extremely rapid but also refined which is exactly what I'm after.
The dealer will have a Polaris White one in soon and we talked figures on that - approx £2.5k off with a fair value on my PX. I'm about ready to do the deal once I've actually given the XFR in question the once over in person.
My only slight reservation now is over the colour. I initially fancied the Kyanite Blue but the white has definitely grown on me. Now looking for any comments on the Polaris White - hoping it will look nice in the UK as opposed to Abu Dhabi!

Your post prompted my interest and I looked at the Jaguar and Pistonhead jaguar listings.
I was surprised at the number of cars in the £40 - £45k bracket
There is a limited edition Black pack XFR, with most of the extras, that is available in black and white.
I am sure when I visited a dealeship recently there were asking £50k.
Given the facelift XF must be previewed soon and uncertainty about petrol prices, I am sure that good deals must be available

I bought my S Type 4.2 V8 from a JMD a few years ago. It was at the time that a facelift was about to be announced. It was a demonstrator with 14 miles on the clock and I was told that nobody had ever had a test drive. The face value of a brand new identical car with the same extras was £39,800. I got the car for £28,000 cash. This was made up of £30,000 for the car with one or two other items I had fitted to it for free, and the dealer picked up the o/s balance due on my then S-Type 4.0 V8 they took in.
I was amazed to have done this deal and, surprisingly, it was mostly dealer lead.
It was also my preferred colour combination of BRG/sand.
I still have the car and it's about to go through 100,000 miles.
