Not a regular poster in this section, but need advice.

Some numpty rear ended me a couple of weeks ago, effectively destroying my van.

Whilst damage isnt overly severe, it's plenty in terms of cost.

Doesnt sound like much, but it's an 06 Vauxhall Combo, value circa £6k. First repair estimate has come in around £4.5k and I can see where the estimate has missed stuff out.

It is a clear cut case of who is at fault, and he has held his hands up and admitted so.

The problem.

It took my 6 months to find this van. Virtually none have electric windows, very few have aircon, very very few are silver, and the 1.7 CDTi isnt overly common, and must be 06+ for cheaper tax.
So finding a van that combines all of the above, well...there are probably more Veyrons for sale in the UK. In fact it's almost certain.

I Live in Northern Ireland, and had to travel to England to find this one. In that 6 months I only found 2 with suitable spec. The first being in Glasgow, and as usual the dealer/seller was a lying ****, with aircon not working and engine management light on and trying to palm me off that it was still under warranty from Vauxhall.

So where does this leave me ?

It doesnt really matter if they payout £6k or £10k, Ive virtually no chance of replacing the van like for like even with travelling throughout the UK to look ( at even more cost. ) There simply are not any for sale.
In fact, it's almost impossible to find them with electric windows nevermind anything else !!

So what the hell am I supposed to do ? Why should I suffer any loss whatsoever because of someone elses fault ?

This really is driving me nuts. I know they are going to try and screw me over.

Could you push for having it repaired or is too bad?

If it is a total loss, take the full payout and try to buy it back for a nominal sum, then get it repaired at a place of your choice for an agreed sum. Should be a lot less for a pj paying cash than insurance repair.

Part of the problem lies with how insurance repair cars. Brand new everything, which in many cases is just plain stupid.
Although a large portion of cost is labour and parts, as it needs a new side put into it, along with rear doors and many trim parts associated.
Side is kinked/rippled from the rear impact.
Although it does still drive perfectly. Nissan Patrol/Navara hit me.

I have literally only just got the quote emailed to me this evening. I'm just trying to get as much info as to possible outcomes and what approach I may need to take to avoid getting screwed.

I think regardless of what does happen, I will insist I keep the van, as there is no doubt a full and proper repair could be done at a good bit less than how an insurer would insist.
Although obviously then it will be listed as category whatever.

I thing the idea of insurance is to replace exactlt what your losses are. Obviously it's convenient for an insurer to give you cash rather then find an identical vehicle. I'd insist they either repair it or find you a like for like replacement. It should be their problem, not yours Stevie.

Oh, shells I found are 59 mm o/d smile
