Advertising a job - silly amount of applications
Discussion
I handed in my notice last week to move to pastures new, the boss was accepting of it as he knew I'd been looking, I did the decent thing and helped him out with the advert and job description.
This job is in the construction industry, opportunities are few and far between in the sector at the moment and obviously attract a lot of attention once they go live.
Yesterday afternoon the job was put in the local rag and on the Jobsite website. By 6pm my boss said he has received 8 applications. This morning a further 11 and he's taken another 3 phone calls about the position before 9am.
It really is quite alarming and a bit of a wake up call that I was incredibly lucky to be able to move jobs in this environment. I also now feel for anyone advertising jobs.
Unfortunately the majority of the applications are of little or no relevance to the job, which is in Architecture. We've had Quantity Surveyors, Aviation Engineers and even a bloke who works for a Builders Merchant drawing Kitchens.
Anyone else had a similar experience?

No surpise, the job market is swamped with people looking and spraying their CV wildly about. I have about 200 CV's for a temp telemarketing position (I only advertised on the DirectGov website) about 150 were way too qualified for the position or no relevant experience.
A few weeks ago when on reed to have a look at some salaries for a position I was looking to recruit for, I spotted lloyds TSB or a similar bank had a position wither over 7000 applicants for a customer service role.

Sorry, it wasn't a dig. It's an advert for an Architect, obviously this guy had CAD experience which is mentioned in the advert and thought he had a chance.
Its cool I was trying to be funny, I was insinuating that you where asking if anyone had any experience as an architect, Quantity surveyor or drawing kitchens.I'll get my coat...

Most may be unsuitable, but I'm betting some of the unsuitable are over rather than under qualified. 200 applications in a short period of time shows people are desperate for work, and the jobs that do get advertised are the ones where an obvious candidate wasn't found before they got to the step of advertising.
The last time I advertised in local papers/job centre I had in excess of 250 applications for 1 job. A large amount of which were totally unsuitable.
The next time I needed to advertise I used a web based service which filters for you. This meant that a large amount of the unsuitables were filtered out before getting as far as me. Still had in excess of 100 applications to read though!
There are a lot of people out there applying for anything they feel remotely able to do. Can't say I blame them really. The only job you will never get is the one you don't apply for.
Some railway companies get such a high number of applications that they set up an answerphone to record the names and addresses of the first 100 people that phone. Only those 100 people get an application form. No application form = no consideration, so they control their numbers quite well that way, but don't necessarily get the best applicants.

Spot on. I have had people with Nuclear Science Doctorates applying. I have very few people whom are underqualified. Frustratingly I have adequatly experienced people I have shortlisted whom haven't turned up for interview.Republik said:
Well they keep flooding in. A mixture of some with no relevant qualifications or experience like the chap with a masters in Pyschology. A few suitable candidates and one guy who wrote, 'I like to work hard, but play even harder.'
