E46 330 Sport - Test drive top tips

Hi all.
I am in that phase again where I am looking for another car. The E46 330 Sport is on my short list (Mazda 6 MPS and Volvo S60R are the other two contendors) so am going to be taking a few for a drive in the near future.
Now with the Volvo having owned a couple and been members of the forums etc etc I know what to look for when I take one for a test drive. I know what recalls have been performed, what common failures are and what to look for on a test drive.
I however don't have as much experience with Bemmers. I was just hoping somebody on here could take me through the E46 major flaws and things to look for, with particular regard to the sport/M-sport models...
A "E46 test drive for dummies" is basically what I'm after.
