A bit of strange post this one, but a few of us have been mulling over the possibility of chartering a helicopter from LBA to Silverstone this year.

We have found that if we charter a 9 seater instead of a 4 seater the cost drops dramatically (no vat). Until tomorrow we have an option on a Dauphin AS365, which is a luxury helecopter similar to the one on the aprentice. Flight time from LBA to silverstone is around 35/40 mins, and straight into the circuit avoiding the traffic.

This works out at £695 pp return(the charge to land at the circuit on race day is £1250), which whilst not cheap, isn't as expensive as you would think.

We have approx 3 seats spare, and need to confirm by tomorrow, with payment in a few weeks, but if anyone is interested drop me an email on

jon at lockyers.co.uk

ps - just to clarify, I aren't a member of the "jet set" just wanted to give it a try;)

Jeez that seems expensive. My mate hires a two seater, £150 ph. Only pay for time it's in air. So hire all day, hours flight to Silverstone, cost £300 plus fuel.

+£1250 landing fee

+GP day premium (there is such a thing on helicopters, more fly on that day than on any other day)

Plus pilot sat around, charter insurance as opposed to self fly, and a Robinson r44 costs a lot less than a 9 seated dauphin. Just seen a 15 year old example of this chopper for sale for 1.8m

Agreed; £279 return 1st class train from Leeds to Northampton (if it isn't delayed or cancelled), 4 hours there and 4 hours back, then you have to get to and from the circuit. Helo is a bargain!

I would but the Strange Rover won't keep up! Although I'm getting an Atom itch that I may need to scratch soon.
