Council liability for paintwork damage?

All advice appreciated. Local council erected a new lamppost near to where my car was parked & painted it green. In the process they generously splattered my bonnet with green paint. I contacted them & they deny responsibility...............anybody been down this route before? What next? Sue? My email: [e-mail] Thanks for any advice received!
