British Gas have been round today and turned off the gas supply to the boiler as the leakage was greater than 25ppm. This was the first visit before being put on the Homecare plan and the bill for the remedial work is £820.

We currently have a Powermax 155 boiler, can anyone recommend a similar boiler or one with similar fittings to keep the cost down?

Cheers

Part of me wants to turn it back on and get a second opinion, but don't take this advice.

Powermax boilers are evil and notorious for leaking products of combustion because engineers don't replace the burner seals when serviving them.

I'm sure there have been a few fatalities with them aswell.

I don't like those types of thermal store combi boilers, they can be complex and most Heating Engineers don't know how to work on them.

I'd imagine your airing cupboard is quite large if you can fit a Powermax in, I'd be tempted to go for a System Boiler and Unvented Cylinder combo if it will fit.

May be a bit pricey, but hell of a lot more reliable I'd imagine.

Cheers, when I looked at the breakdown of the quote British gas want to replace the spark electrode. I know this doesn't need doing as it was replaced 3 month ago when we had a boiler fault. So what else are they fibbing about.

It's 13 year old and starting to breakdown, the parts are still available except the circuit board. The boiler is very good, loads of hot water and I'm loathed to change it to be honest. However if the circuit board goes its wasted repair money.

I've got a heating engineer coming round tomorrow afternoon for a quote on the repair or replacement of the boiler. Had a quick look on the net for similar product and found the Viessman 222F, anyone heard of it?

Anyone had any experience of British Gas new boiler installs?, competitively priced?

Had a BG leaflet through the letterbox yesterday, advertising a £1000 off installations so, they might just be coming close to being competitive.

Expensive, and they charge an arm and a leg for their system flushing.

Couldn't he just have new burner seals then?

Possibly, I've not dealt with the gas side of these boilers.

looking at the available options the system boiler would suit us best unless combi boilers have overcome the issue of poor flow and tendency for the temperature to cool when in use over two areas.
The airing cupboard I think would be big enough to house a cylinder and system boiler. How much at a rough guess for cost to change?

Cylinder ???
Labour ???

Hopefully it won't come to this and can be repaired cheaply but need a plan for when the boiler finally packs up.

Having just had BG try & screw my mother out of over £3K for a new boiler as the old one was knackered(which I got working in 10mins and has since been checked by them again to be found fine!) I would be getting a second opinion!

Have you tried Heateam?
We have a Powermax as well, and Heateam were the only people who would repair it. Apparently they bought up the company that made the Powermax after they went bust.
When ours broke, they did a one off repair for about 150 quid, well worth it, as it included labour + parts!

I have one of these in my house and the smaller 140 model in a rental property.

I don’t know where you are based but http://www.miketheboilerman.com/ has a site with some info on them.

BG has had issues with the powermax so may be overly wary http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/1917411.gas_poiso...

Pretty much every house built on our estate has one of these (100 units, Swindon) and the general consensus is that if serviced regularly etc they are ok.

I had heard of there reputation and had carbon monoxide detectors around it just in case. Just waiting for a decent quote for replacement as I think 13 years is good going. British Gas got back to us with revised quote of £3700.....for a combi boiler!!! at least Dick Turpin wore a mask.

Yes. No.

But we went ahead for the peace of mind of dealing with a large company (had them do a few other bits and bobs as well, including installing radiators in the conservatory which required a more powerful boiler) and knowing that they supplied and fit the lot so we would have one point of call if anything went wrong.

To their credit when we had a problem they had someone out that afternoon and it was all fixed.
