Registering a US import in the UK..

Hi,

The vehicle has already underwent the IVA but it now requires registration and taxing in the UK.

But you need insurance to tax, But you dont have a UK registration number?!

Can anyone help as the DVLA website has confused me!haha.

Insurance companies will often insure on the VIN for a limited time if you call them and explain the situation.

So, Insure it on VIN, Take the insurance, new reg and IVA cert down and thats all required to register?

I've only ever done it with EU imports -- I think you have to post all the stuff off and they contact you within a couple of days with the registration number. There's a form you have to fill in of course, and I guess you'd have to prove (if a new car) that you'd paid VAT and duty.

You can insure it on the VIN but equally you can register it and get a number allocated and then ask the insurers to change it to the new reg. I did it be buying a private plate from DVLA and doing it in one hit, IIRC.

Well I did it a few years ago and back then you needed Mot, sva cert, USA title docs, docs that prove you paid dutys at the port, I'm sure i might have missed something!

Also as others have said you can insure it using the VIN

Its been imported already so the dutys paid by the company that imports all the cars.

They basically choose a whole load of cars and import them, All you do is register it.

What are the registration costs?

Can't you register it and then insure it then tax it?

Otherwise how do brand new cars get registered? (I provided a dealer with my insurance document after I had the registration number from them)

Nope, To register it has to be insured.

You HAVE TO HAVE the duties paid HM document to register it. No document, no registration.

Yes guys, I know, I have all the documents. I'm just saying in reply to 'pay the duty', It has already been paid and I have the invoice and confirmation here.

Im just wondering how much it is and what documents I need?

New registration fee is currently £55, so you just need insurance on the VIN, a completed V55, some proof of identity (for you and the car) and you can get it registered and get some plates.

ETA: DVLA should be able to help you out on this...
