First quick job, took the radio/cassette out (pioneer circa 1835) next job dash off to have a look whats causing the windscreen to steam up? Please god let it be a loose hose to the matrix. then the radiator off for a recore. Then the inlet manifold gasket to replace. Trying to find a bloke that repairs a prehistoric cassette player that sounds like Mickey Mouse and Speedy Gonzales all rolled into one. Fingers crossed for me lads!!!

You can buy Cassette head cleaners (Google it). If you can get IPA or the like use that instead of the weak water you get now, and you'll see all the crud that comes of the capstans.
Hopefully that'll help the tape feed at the correct speed.
If it's belt driven the rubber belts may be stretched etc, but I'm buggered if I know where you'd get them (I have taken many cassette decks apart... not so many went back together again tho :-) )

Pioneer is likely to be the motor, belts may have slipped - depends on the model it may have fiber clutches which also wear. Most often the motor, not difficult to change.

Im sure I used to take the belts off and clean them in vinegar to tighten them up and stop them slipping, might be worth a try before launching it!

Cheers Stu i was gunna replace it with a brand new all singing and dancing one but it means cutting the center consol switch plate to suit as the storks on the radio actually fix it to it and it seems such a shame to do so. I have looked a lad up via the net not too far away who repairs old radio cassette players, and he does it from his house so shouldnt be too steep. Not being funny here but if the belts are slipping surely that would mean it would play slow not fast? but like i say i know nothing about them!

What about making a new front plate instead?
Simple to do out of aluminium plate...... :scratchin:

Actually, that sounds like a plan for the weekend, Ive got a front switch plate with the big hole cut very shabbily into it for the stereo, perhaps I could even get the decals put back on and work out how to retain it properly without drilling holes for the heater control screws...

Ill keep you informed

Hi Stu..Have you got access to a CNC machine as thats what they use to cut it once its glued to the plate..I found someone in greenwich that charges £30 hour but will only take 15-20 mins..You could cut it with a very sharp blade..I always manage to slip and cut myself so CNC for me..Zig

PS: If your about tomorrow afternoonish and you dont mind a visit..smile

No acces to CNC Mark but Ive got a spare that I can play with, Iva also asked my fabrication mate to knock up a few blanks so that I can play with and make a few more faceplates up with.
Ive got some veneer that I was going to use on the complete dash and glovebox but as they are in pretty good shape Ill be doing the door handles and the switch plate.

Not about tomorrow, got sister and brother down for my 3 year olds birthday.

Ill have some spare veneer if you want some to cover the switchplate Dix, shout me an address and ill post it over.

I remember when a an old Akai tape deck of mine packed up, so before binning it I took it to pieces and discovered that the belt had bust.

Phoned up the hifi shop and they said it would be summat daft like 20 quid and 3 months delivery for a new belt.

Hmm, sure I've got a big laggy band that sort of size, I thought.

Popped it on and away she went, working perfectly....and did so until I flogged it several years later. hehe

Eta:

Use that 'Rubbing Alcohol' stuff from chemists, and a cotton bud for cleaning the tape player heads, etc. Also use for mossy and gnat bites when you're on a run out. smile
