Microphone, whats your method?

Ok so I'm off round europe this summer in my Griff and got my self a cheap Zi8 video camera as it has 60fps 720p recording and and external mic input.
The griff sounds awesome, but it's a black art recording it.
I have a small external stereo mic which works well for a "fly past" but what do any of you guys do when on track days/trips to get good engine sound? I've tried the boot and its too muffeled, also anyone made a foam cover for stopping wind noise, I was thinking old panscrub?
