New York bus crash kills 13
Discussion

After a discussion on here about how a tree trunk can rip a car in half, I thought that lamp posts where supposed to give when hit by a vehicle.
Obviously not in New York.

"It slid on its side and then hit a light pole which sheared off the top of the bus, the spokesman said"

So the pole took out the top of the bus, which is pretty much all glass.
Hope that answers your question.

Bit early for a tour bus?
Been checking some US news sites, who're saying it was returning to NY from a casino trip to Connecticut - it wasn't a sightseeing bus. These sites also confirm what I suspected from the BBC photo, it was a fairly susbstantial gantry support rather than just a lamp post.Puggit said:
33 on the bus. After seeing those pictures, all I can say is "only 13 dead?!".
Horrible.
I have to feel very, very sorry for the rescue services who had to go in there and recover the bodies.Horrible.
But yes, if there were 33 people on that bus and 20 survived, I am quite amazed - I just imagined that no-one on board would be walking away from that.
