Have been looking at Fender combos: why is the frontman 212R so cheap? On one hand its bargain of the century, or the other hand I am extremely suspiscous...

Yep, I guess solid state amps with no on board modelling must be cheaper to make.

If it sounds good to you though...

Solid state amps are cheaper, full stop. They are also a lot better at being amplifiers in most situations (i.e. not having parts that wear out, being able to be played properly at low volume, not being tempramental in the cold etc etc.)

As the others have said, they are solid state rather than valve amps.

I would save up and get a Hot Rod Deluxe... They sound fantastic!!

That they do. But it's not exactly user friendly as standard for the bedroom, with 90% of the apparent volume between 0 and 1 on the dial. biggrin

You're right. A Deluxe needs to be cranked up to really enjoy it. However, a Fender Twin is an option as it comes with a 25% switch (so 25 watts instead of 100). Got one of each but trading them in for a cheap Peavy Bandit 115 (more appropriate for the band i'm in)! PM if you're interested...

Twins are lovely if you have a roadie, they are bloody heavy. I understand the HRD can be modded to make the volume control a bit less silly. It does sound awesome when turned up full though, only had to do it once at a 500 capacity venue with only a vocal PA.
