Firstly, ill start with a little history, i owned one of these cars in 8v guise when i was 19 in 2000, i had it for 3 years before moving on to a Corrado VR6, anyway i always liked the Ibizas and recently i spotted a 16v version for sale locally in the same colour as my old one, it was cheap and i snapped it up.

However, paperwork issues and general poor condition meant i wasnt prepared to spend too much money on that particular car so i broke it up, and began looking for another one, this time being more specific

The requirements were aas follows, 16v, as little rust as possible, later car with red tiger stripe interior in Bengal Yellow

So i looked and looked but each yellow car was rough, miles away or both, then i spotted this one, not exactly what i had in mind, but beneath the awful tinted windows, lights and other chavvy modifications i seen a clean car with potential, and low miles at 77,000

So i arranged to go see the car, and after a 5 hour drive i was somewhat disapointed, the car wasnt as described in the advert, and the current owner described the exhaust as sounding "mint", when i started it up, i said, "perhaps to you it sounds mint, to me it sounds awful and will be the first thing coming off", however the bodywork was very very clean for a mk2 Ibiza, with no rust in the rear arches or the seams inside the doors, which was something positive

Anyway a deal was made and i took it home

On the trailer at Ikea in Edinburgh en route home, stopped in by for some bedroom furniture, this was the original intention of the trip, the car was mentioned after we left home

So thats it home and i have began by returning it to a presentable state for a 29 year old guy

What ive done so far

Removed window tints
Removed tinted rear lights and plinth, and replaced with standard items
Removed meguiars stickers
Removed noisy stainless exhaust and decat and replaced it with a standard cat and exhaust
Replaced the heater motor and 4 stage resistor

Still to do

Two front top mounts
Replace power steering pump (got this today)
Refit front bumper
Replace plinth reflectors with correct carbon effect ones (got these today)
Replace parcel shelf (got this today)
Refit standard airbox
Swap airbag slipring
Two punctures at the front need fixed

These are the jobs i need to get done to get it MOTd and useable, i think its probably a little too low so i intend to sort that out in time and i also plan on getting the standard wheels from the other 16v i broke up recently refurbished in the white they shoud be

Other non essential jobs are

Remove rear mudflaps (not essential)
Refit Rear Wiper (not essential)
Install standard headunit
Order new handbrake cover
Repaint rear bumper
Order GTi 16v Grille badge, GTi & 2.0 16v boot badge along with a Cupra Sport badge in chrome
Order jacking point covers

I may have been crazy buying this car but it will hopefully be back on the road MOTd and taxed by the end of the month looking a whole lot better than it does in the pictures

Like it! Brother had a metallic burgandy/burnt orange one for a bit, was a nice thing and looked good just lowered with tints! What are they like to drive?

Nice. A mate had a 1.4 16v as his first car. Seem to recall it was fairly rapid and handled well. Look forward to seeing progress photos.

That will be lovely once you've returned it to original spec! What were the power output/performance figures for these as standard?

MGZRod, the car I had when I was younger was Natural copper, as was the one I just bought and broke up, you will see this yellow one going around Aberdeen soon.

They drive rather well, I think they are about as close to a modern mk2 16v Golf GTI as you can which is no bad thing, but this obviously has the benefit of the ABF 16v engine (which is a great swap into the mk2 Golf) as standard.

Power output was quoted as 150bhp, the same asthe mk3 16v Golf GTI

Made some progress with the car tonight, I got both punctures fixed, fitted the replacement power steering pump, standard airbox and parcel shelf, so I'm hoping to get cracked on tomorrow doing the bumper and steering wheel slip ring or top mounts, we shall see how it goes

Pleased with how it's progressing, I have changed my mind on wheels, I am now currently on the lookout for some 17" Speedline Chronos
