Ok, so what wafty but economic car would you buy?

What would you recommend? So far the X-Type estate seems to be the best I can find

Ford Mondeo Ghia X 2.0 / 2.2 TDCI?

Remember the X Type basically is a Mondeo, but because of the blue oval you will be able to get a newer one with more toys for less money.

Very good fun to drive too - I have a 2002 1.8 LX and it is very comfortable, and good fun to hammer down a back road every now and then.

So did I, and so did I.

I bought the EuroIV engined version (with the dreaded DPF) a couple of months ago. It seems to be returning about 41 mpg overall, but would easily crack 45 on a run, is comfy, has adequately performance and a nice 5 cylinder warble. (A nice sounding diesel! Whatever next?)

The earlier EuroIII engine is reportedly a bit more economical.

For a 10k budget you can consider 5-6 year old Merc S-Classes, Audi A8s or BMW 7 series diesels.

You can get 40mpg out of these.

A big step up from the Mondeos and Passats of this world.

If you can get 42mpg out of the 4.2tdi, I'm damn sure you can do so in the 3.0tdi.

Though I'd go for the ST TDCi version wafty on the Mway and fun on the B roads

I've had Mondeo 2.0 TDCi and currently own a V70 D5.

The volvo has much more power/bhp 185 vs 130. In a straight line the volvo is quicker, but the mondeo is lighter and has much better handling. Both are nice and comfy for day to day driving, but the volvo has the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in and therefore is great for cruising about, particularly on the motorway.

The TDCi Mundano is is the 155 Jaguar 2.2 engine with petrol ST excellent seats & interior.
I had one a while ago after several Volvo's & Saabs.

Wow, this is turning out to be an interesting debate, may look into the Mondeo further although the Volvo route may be interesting, I had a T5R but economic it was not!
