BMW v12 and G50 dimensions
Discussion
I have a couple of BMW V12 in the garage.... I'll see if I can take some measurements. basically its very similar dimensions to a SB chevy when everything is bolted on.
The box I have is almost same as a G50 (GT3) but with cable shift so isn't as long as the G50 due to the rod shifter on the G50... but I can get you some dimensions as a close guide.
If you e-mail me through PH I can send you some pics.
Andy
BTW I'm obviously developing an adapter plate, flywheel, clutch, dry sump and twin turbo kit for this engine.
If you have any sources or development in this area you can share it would be appriciated.

Here we are discussing yet again a very original concept of a V12 engined Ultima, which has been done to perfection with total success. Look back into the history of debate and see what happened when a Rotary thread was shot down along with the BMW V8 thread, or Lexus TT for that matter.
All very interesting and workable projects. It can only be benefitial to the long term survival of the company. The more of them there are out there, the more versatile the platform proves for any running gear, and the more appeal for a sale there is. It can only lead to more Ultima's winning races and generating an edge to the already established pedigree.
If a company is to survive it has to move with the times in order for it to remain an interesting and buoyant product.
If the factory said to me that it had developed a V12 BMW engine kit, I would have ordered the car and built it instead of buying second hand. As it is I am hovering over buiding my own and doing just that anyway, just waiting for prices from Richard.
This is an enthusiasts car and needs to be reacted to enthusiastically.
I say what I think and so do you, so it follows that we might not agree all the time.
Right, back to topic.

As far as when the last time I spoke to him the engine was about to be ran on the Dyno. So would suspect it's running by now. He's realy helpful and eager to chat about all things Ult related etc.
Pritty serious making your own crank and modifing the block (sleaved and stroked to 6.1 Litre with M3 heads i.e. Identical to Macca F1 spec).

Doubt he's geared it to get much past 200mph... few ultimas are.
I have had quite a bit of contact with Jay due to my own interest in the V12 and last time he mailed me he had started the 4v heads but he had other commitments that held priority.
One things for sure... he's got an awsome Ultima with superb engineering.... and unsurprisingly his inspiration came from the Mac F1.

These, like other factors can be surpassed if there is a will...
Jay has already overcome most problems, be it from chassis torsional stiffness to engine dynamics; so I am sure that a few aerodynamics issues will present little problem, given time. I eagerly await information on the latest V12 incarnation.
You have to marvel at engineers in general: they always seek to make the best better.
Who knows? It may be possible in years to come, to buy the equivelent of the Macca F1 engine; over the shelf as a powerplant option. From Ultima? That would surely be a revelation worth waiting for

Did he not measure the chassis torsional stiffness after hacking it to fit the engine and also prior to riviting the alley. If i remeber correctly he did not rate his unfinished and unmodified chassis that highly.
I am not going out of my way to defend the factory but people are keen to modify then claim there is faults with what already works

He measured it before, during and after he modified it... its all outlined on his site.
I think its worth mentioning that it takes some significant chasis modifications to get the BMW in including the engine bay cross bracing....
not something to be gone into lightly by the individual and a lot of work for the factory to offer it as an option.
Not that I think the shouldn't, I would have gone for it when I built mine.

I didn't think Jay's car was considered an Ultima since he modified and fitted a non factory spec engine?

If someone takes the rover engine out of a Land Rover and puts in a Chevy engine, it is still a Land Rover. It isn't just the engine that makes the car what it is.
However, I wouldn't put the BMW engine in an Ultima. Part of the experience for me is the sound of the V8 lump, not a V12 whine.
(I haven't heard the V12, but I can't imagine it sounds as good as the Chevy's song)
