Hello,

My Dad is looking to replace his windows but wondered whether the double glazing units (i.e. just the glass, not the frames) come in standard sizes. Anyone know? Anyone know of a supplier?

The windows have panes about 6" wide and we presume that it'll be hard/expensive to get them?

Thanks,
Phil.

I'd ring up a d/g manufacturer (there may be one lurking on a nearby industrial estate) and get a quote for the dimensions. Not very expensive.

NB: 6" is a very small window!

From my experience they are custom made. When I had it done they measured up all the windows a couple of weeks later all the bits arrived marked up with which was which.

Are your frames going to be deep enough? a single pane of glass is 6mm (ish) thick while a double glazed unit is 25mm or so (roughly). Hardly a like for like replacement.

It's only one of the panes!

Yep. The whole lot are going to be made from scratch. Cheers.

Note that frames for DG units are wider than old single windows. If the pane is 6" wide now it might only be 3" by the time it's doubleglazingified.

Gotcha. Is there such a thing as a "stick on" beading thingy? So... we could use a standard sized DG pane and make it look like they're smaller panes? Obviously we're not worried about these ones opening.

You can get stick on lead type beading

If you are making specially remember to allow expansion space - typically plastic spacers around the edge of the DG panel.

For windows I would also be looking at drainage channels, not sure about such small ones though.

These are from the Amazon Windows site. The second one does look stuck on:

Why are you buying frames & glazing separately & not as a package?
