I finally have cracked on this subject and would like to see your reactions. Now I've played a fairly good level all my life and even on occasions made the county team, then I moved to France 11 years back. Now one must appreciate that countries are different, but golf is golf and the rules should apply worldwide - or at least so I thought. Four ball better ball is unknown, as is the process of giving shots because according to the French only the computer can work it out. OK, so our favourite casual game is out the window, and we play in fours but no shots, so they wonder why my partner and I keep on winning against people off 14 or above. None of this really matters - it's just local custom but then:-

Cheating is rife, since when we play competitions in strokeplay I have often had the retort, after being asked how many I took on a hole, "I have enough problem with my game let alone counting your shots". I see people marking their ball in front and putting the ball in front of the marker, even down to one senior who, on marking his ball correctly, tossed his coin marker six inches nearer the hole each time. But the final dénouement came when we had a Grand Prix here; Our president is a national referee, appearing at the French Open etc. I watched this player, having driven into the rough, moving all the heather aside so he could get a good shot at the ball. I rang the president, with a second witness with me to back me up. His reply? None of your business! He didn't penalise the player, so even according to a national rules man cheating is permitted.

I resigned. I can't bear any more to see the game I have loved for 40 years so disdainfully treated. I haven't touched a club for two years now, and while I miss golf from time to time, I'm afraid I can see no sense in playing at my level againt this kind of behaviour.
