Manifold issues

Some advice please.......
When taking out the precats last year I noticed on reassembly there was quite a big gap between the manifolds and y piece, about half to three quarters of an inch. I managed to pull it in with ratchet straps but now have a crack in the middle of the four into one on one manifold. Not sure if I did it bashing out the precats or pulling it in. Whilst stripping down wishbones etc "whilst Im in there" I have taken off the manifolds to fix the problem. A couple of questions please:
1 The manifold faces are not good, they are quite pitted and getting very narrow in places. Can these be built up and skimmed or should I use some compound with the gaskets? If I use compound what would you reccommend?
2 Welding up the cracked manifold looks a bit of a PITA - is this a specialist job or can any decent welder do it?
3 Even when welded are they likely to split again when I ratchet them - is this size gap usual?

Ok thanks chaps welding the manifold is no big deal and I assume they will take a half inch ratchet pull to put it back togeather but what about
