CLK 270 Diesels are they usually this noisy??

My wife is up for a change of car and has fallen in love with a local CLK 2.7 cdi auto. That was until she took it for a test drive. To be frank the engine sounded like a black cab, it may have just been cold and the car actually ran out of fuel during the test drive. But are these engines all this crude sounding, would it be better to go for a newer 220 diesel at a stretch?

They are very noisy if they aren't warmed up and I'm not talking just a 5 minute warm up. Check all the platic engine covers are on properly, i had a few loose ones that made it sound like a Hackney!!

That's a good point - I've got one and on a cold day it takes 20 miles to warm it up. They have an electric booster heater which works below 8C but they often fail. Don't buy it if your missus will only be using for 2 mile trips to the shops.

They are quite sensitive to oil - they'll take anything but a 40 weight oil will make it quieter than a 30. Also make sure the oil level is reasonable, but don't overfill or you'll get high oil level warnings when the engine is hot.

I would say the car is noisy when standing in front of it but shouldn't be bad inside. I like the burbly sound of the 5cyl.

I would be careful with running out of diesel with any merc cdi engine as diesel pump dont like running dry and can easily get damaged.
