I think the only way they could have made that more sensationalist is if they had got the phrase "global solar Tsunami" in there somewhere. I bet he is kicking himself for that.
Aircraft routes are changed daily whether is for the jet stream or solar activity over the poles, its no big deal, whats the betting the communications problems on the flight from Hawaii was not solar radiation related but more just a fault in the radio. As for global transactions failing because of no GPS signal, well what moron would design a system that important then rely on a single unreliable source of time.
Yes a solar maximum will have some effects on electronics on planet earth and our satellites, but
I doubt it will put us back in the dark ages, and even if it does, there seems little point in going there of our own free will as a preventative measure.

Nobody, just misinformed bks. Critical Stratum 0/1 services don't rely on a single method, they use MSF and/or DCF-77 LF radio and in the case of total failure fall back to their internal oscillators.Sir John Beddington said:
What is absolutely critical is that we do have to take space weather seriously. This is an international issue and it is international collaboration that is how we are going to deal with it.
Am I the only one who thinks that Beddington is a deluded moron?International collaboration can do F**k all about solar flares.
Proctecting our comms systems is a national issue.
I'm not sure that any government scientist has done anything useful in the last 50 years.
