MOT / Service day!
Discussion
Why do cars know that they are in for an MOT?
Yesterday, everything worked.
This morning, I got in the '5 and discovered the horn has stopped working and the right indicator is going double-speed and not flashing at the front!

So, in for her MOT and service - I don't have any garage space so can't do any work myself so asked the garage to do an oil and filter service, fit supplied Yellowstuff pads and Goodrich SS hoses, do a full brake fluid flush and replacement and inspect the suspension.
Given I have supplied most of the expensive bits I am hoping the bill (assuming no other MOT bits) will be less tha £250 - is that a reasonable expectation?

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! With old cars every MOT is a minefield. Hopefully you've got a trusted garage to do it for you and not the local Kwikfit?
Yeah, they are a good bunch. Not specialist but decent job at decent rates, plus the MIL does the books for them so get a bit of extra service...The acid test will be if I get in the car tonight and the brake pedal is rock solid. If it is spongy after everything I asked for then I know they have cocked it up.
Passed for another year!
Needed horn fixing, new indicator bulb and a replacement gasket between exhaust and CAT.
£300 all in, including the fitting of the Yellowstuffs and SS brake hoses.
Brakes are like night and day compared to what I had before - superb bite and gives me real reassurance.
All great service, but I left the garage feeling a little disappointed - that air leak in the exhaust gasket was giving out a lovely burble....at low revs it's gone from sounding like a 60s MG V8 to any other MX5.

Is it easy to remove the CAT?
Few bolts and a bit of messing underneath the car I believe.http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info.php/product...
Yeah it's an easy job to remove the cat aslong as the bolts come off! Mine was a nightmare as I ended up mangling most of the bolts. I had to take it Onlymx5ives, he ended up attacking it with a big breaker bar, broke all the bolts off for me. Then it was simply a case of taking it off, replacing with the Mx5parts silenced decat and getting some new bolts! Job done.
Hope you don't mind a slight hi-jack but it didn't seem worth starting a new thread. It's MoT day for me and my mk1 5.
Before taking it in I have forked out £200 for some new alloys to replace the very old ones I was running on. Decided I may as well get the Geometry done as the car was there and I have just been told I need 7 adjustments to get it right which will be around £100.
So with the MoT still to be done a sinking feeling about my brake pads can someone please remind me just how much fun these cars are when all is running smoothly so I can face handing over the cash at the end of the day.

Yes, it's 4 bolts, however don't do it. MX5's sound absolutely gash with no CAT. It's a very tinny raspy noise that isn't at all plesant. You can get silenced de-cats, but they just bring the noise back to fitted CAT level so all you're doing is improving exhaust flow marginally.

After picking mine up the other day, having just had Yellowstuff brake pads and Goodrich s/s hoses fitted, I had a great hoon on the way home. Before taking it in I have forked out £200 for some new alloys to replace the very old ones I was running on. I got the supercharger nice and hot and hit my favorite lanes on route - fantastic! The brakes are superb and I found I could brake at the last minute, making the drive all the more thrilling.
Yeah, so it cost me £450 including the parts I supplied, but it was well worth it.
Summer is coming!!!

That's what I like to hear
At least it is nice today so I can have a good roof down drive when I collect it.
In the event that I do need to sort out my brakes do you know what are good for an NA 1.6? I've heard bad things about the Greenstuff pads but as I only use the car on the road I don't know what level would be suitable. Half thinking about just getting some pads and discs ordered anyway as I am spending money on the car at the moment.

I understand GreenStuff are pretty variable in quality. Not what you want!
I have been very impressed with the Yellowstuffs so far but can't really give a recommendation based on 3 days use.
To be honest, you can't go wrong with standard pads and a good brake fluid bleed.
S/S hoses are about £60 and contract less than the standard rubber ones giving you less spongeyness on the pedal.
Buying brakes is a bit boring, but they are about the only safety measure us mk1 owners have!! So I have made sure they are as good as they can possibly be!

I have actually just fallen in love! The tracking must have been worse than I thought because it is like driving a different car. Everything is so light and quick that I was approaching roads I know well with so much more confidence. The shiny new wheels and freshly polished body help as well
Now I need to do everything to it. Brake pad and hoses research to be done!
What a great day to have and MX-5
