I have a 2.5 boxster, since new, six years ago.
Covered about 300.000 km

My fuel consumption used to be 510km per tank of 52 liters.
This has allways been very stable, a little bit more or a little less, depending on the gravity forces on my right foot.

But since my last service I cover 10% more kilometers with the same amount of exactly the same fuel as before?

I got no clue why this is possible.

Love the car!!! could use more horses (that 's why I am saving up for a RUF transplant)

300,000 km!!!! That is some going.

Are you using better quality petrol (Optimax or whatever they call it on the continent)?

Monty, no, I am using Esso 98 octane.

It does happen sometimes when I am abroad that I am forced to use other fuel. Brands such as ARAL, I can notice that this fuel is of a poor quality, the car starts to behave differently has less power and doesn't pull smoothly.

Roger's lumbered with the fuel-sapping Tip - ain't you Rog. Between that and the fact that his left hand pedal seems broken, that's why he gets 20.

We've recently had a poll at Boxa with the outcome that the vast majority use shell Optimax noticing improved performance and better mpg.

Guess what I'm using....

I actually had an interesting "experiment" with fuel brands on a couple of long-mileage runs up and down the country. On the same trip (identical driving style, conditions etc) I got 250 miles out of a tank of Esso unleaded, and 320 out a tank of Shell unleaded. I repeated the experiment in the wife's ford and got a similar result, so haven't filled up from Esso since, and never will again.

I think there is a correlation with the rear tyre wear and the low MPG.

Could be due to tyre over inflation from the last service.

I think over inflation will reduce rolling resitance (decrease grip though) and will lead to a higher MPG.

I know the the opposite is true low inflation gives a lower MPG.......

Might be worth checking.

Robyn, you are missing the obvious link in my post.

Interesting post about the different fuel suppliers GreigM. I've an 'S' and get about 26 to the gallon but that using Esso most of the time, I had a Griff before - less said about that the better - that used Optimax. Time for me to use more Optimax.

mind you the remark about tyre pressure is interesting.

I did check my tyre pressure recently and found it on the low side(about 1.5 bar) I pumped them up 2 for the front and 2.5 for the rear tyres.

The poor performance of Esso is a surprise, I only use Esso here in Belgium, will have to give Shell a try.

And of course my right foot is very lame, only use that foot when I am cruising in Germany.

Too bl**dy expensive to do in Belgium. Fines are astronomically expensive
