Advice for a novice

Four of us have decided we want to have a bit of a laugh and do the odd track day here and there. We've all agreed to put £250 into the hat and buy something at auction. It will be exclusively for the track day and will need to be something that we can throw away if it goes shiney side up.

We want to do some mods, but nothing extravegant. Off to a cheapo auction soon and there's everything there from MG 1.8 ZRs to Fiat coupes. Googling 'track days' brings up a multitude of sites, so if there's any decent one's for the beginner a pointer would be appreciated.

Buy a MK1 MX5, strip it to an inch of its life, stick on some Gaz golds and a set of Hankooks and then take it round Brands and watch yourselves beat some much more expensive machinery.

106 GTI / Saxo VTS / 306 GTI-6. Possibly an early Clio 172, but maybe a bit risky at that price.

Cheap to buy and run, lots of broken ones for parts and good fun on track.

Strip it.

Up the budget and buy some half decent suspension and tyres.

Job done.

Above all, buy something mechanically sound. You won't be popular if it dumps fluid all over the track and the session has to be abandoned. Can't go wrong with an MX5 though.

Thanks for the info so far.

We've been offered an MG ZR with a 2.0T from a 620Ti in it. No idea what the condition is yet, but if it's been done properly, it might be a possibility.

A golf gti 180 is still expensive to buy, more like £1,000 each than £250 each
2)
A what use would a mk4 golf be on a track they are useless at going round corners.
