thinking of taking my old dad to an airshow this year, not been for ages. we used to go a lot when i was a kid, thought it'd be a good father-son day out!

so what's looking good this year?

he loves spitfires, so something warbird based would be good, and not worried at all about civilian aviation!

Given you're in Essex it should be pretty easy for you to get to, get there early and spend the morning looking round the excellent museum before the show from lunchtime onwards.

Shoreham has a reasonable amount of warbirds and is probably quieter than Duxford.

I'd recommend Duxford Flying Legends, although it is getting rather expensive these days.

If your dad's getting on a bit I wouldn't bother with RIAT, it's a ball-ache from start to finish nowadays with long queues to park, long queues on foot to get through security, a massive showground (that is half empty) to tramp across and the display is a shadow of its former self. Duxford's Flying Legends is the best warbird show in the northern hemisphere, can be busy but nothing like RIAT in terms of hassle factor. Any Shuttleworth show on a sunny day is a fabulous choice too though they can be a bit light on warbirds compared to Duxford, with more in the way of pre-WW2 types including civvies. It's also the only venue where you can realistically watch the show from a fold-up chair by your car (or in your car!).
