"At the time she was already receiving £170,000 worth of benefits a year, which included £150,000 housing benefit for a seven bedroom property in Acton, west London."

Plain and simple, this is why so many asylum seekers come all the way through Europe to settle here. Because they will become settled, and live off our taxes.

The system is wide open to abuse, so they come to abuse it (and it's also abused by the indigenous population!)

So, the implied question, Eric, is "how does an asylum seeker manage to defraud our benefit system to such a huge extent?"

Actually Eric, there was nothing illegal about the £170k a year.

Not illegally.
The 12K per month rent and additional claims were legal.
She also claimed a total of @ £30K legally but failed to declare 'substantial savings' which renders the £30K claim illegal.
'so' the family would have been fully entitled to their £150K per year lifestyle had they had no savings in the bank.
HTH
PS if you are happy to pay for their lifestyle please do so and remove the burden from our benefit system.

There bloody well should be.

And we wonder where the black hole is in local government spending...?

Nice work. I seriously doubt they'll jail a mother of 7. I also very much doubt she'll be deported. Suspended sentence, maybe a 50 quid fine and that'll be that.

Hang on. They ran away from the Taliban, so surely, thanks to our enormously expensive intervention to remove the Taliban it will be perfectly safe to return silly

...correct Sir....send them back from whence the came. Of course there is more chance of the moon being made of blue cheese for that to ever happen. I despair of this country.

it's a shame that the goverment fails to audit these benifit claimants to save money rather than continue to make redundant our own.
I am sure that there is a huge saving to be had by deporting them.

Yawn.

She commited a crime.
She was found guilty,.
She won't be deported as the conditions which allowed her to successfully claim asylum have not changed
She will get a sentence of some sort - custodial or otherwise

Next.

It's interesting because it is part of a well organised and systematic plundering of the benefit system. The woman got caught out on a relatively minor infringement. However, specialised expertise is required to get away with it for so long and also to extract the maximum from the system. invariably it also involves the collusion of the Landlord. There is a whole underground industry of specialist immigration/asylum/ benefit advisors that are facilitating this type of fraud.

The best thing that the new Coalition government has done is to reduce Housing Benefit. This will automatically make this type of thing less lucrative.

Goverment cuts affected councils, so councils made staff cuts.
whilst benifits continue to pay for these type of people who continue to fraud the system of millions a year.
As you say they won't deport her and family, we won't get any of the money back but we will continue to give her benifits because of her kids(and the fact she is still entitled).
What i feel should happen is we take her savings then buy her and her family first class tickets back to the country she came from and do likewise to anybody else that gets caught.
