Driving Instructors...

Afternoon all,
There's a chap who lives near us who claims to be a driving instructor.
Someone i work with is learning with him.
Now i'm doubting his credentials, he charges £10 an hour & has told the guy i work with that he will pass his test after 6 hours of tuition. (This guy has never had a lesson before).
He also drives round in a nackered old shed, with faded paintwork & torn interior on the seats.
The only person i've ever seen him teaching is his daughter & we've lived down the road from him for 16/17 years.
He does'nt advertise or have a driving instructor board on his car & i think he could possibly not actually be an instructor.
He could well be, but i don't think he is.
He even told the guy i work with that his current car is his "back-up". I obviously know that the car he "teaches" in is the only car the house hold has.
Is there any way to check a database or anything of qualified instructors as the guy at work thinks i'm full of s

A quick Google turned up the Driving Instructors Association, you could try the instructor search there:

I thought that anyone over 25 who had held their license for more than 3 years could teach and think the bigger issue would be whether he has sufficient insurance to cover teaching.

You can sit with a learner but can not charge for the 'instruction'.http://www.driving.org/

Well the guy i work with is adamanet this guy is legit as he came "recommended" from his family.
I'm pretty sure he's just a bloke who offers to sit with people & isn't actually an instructor!
I know his registered address, name of his "driving school" & his first name but don't know his surname weirdly having lived practically next door for so many years.
I don't really want to grass anyone in or get anyone into any trouble more, to just make the guy at work aware of the fact he's probably wasting his cash!

sounds mega dodgy to me..... if he was fully qualified he most certainly wouldnt be charging £10 an hour and fully qualified instructors have to have an adi badge / sticker in their winsdcreen which i m guessing he hasnt... as for telling a complete novice he ll "pass his test after 6 hours of tuition"... bullst!!
t!!I was under the impression that DSA requires the qualification badge to be displayed when payed instruction is being given, irrespective of the level at which training is being given.
The key is "fee or favour", if you get either of these then you need to be registered with the DSA and get the badge from them. IAM / RoADA observers etc provide a free service as instructors so a DSA is not required.

The learner is employing the insructor who claims to be running a business. Would it not be a defence that it is reasonable to expect the business to have insurance in a similar way to company vehicle drivers?Police may take this matter rather seriously.
A few years ago my mother was training to be an instructor. One of the local instructors didn't like this and took to phoning the police all the time saying she was taking money for lessons when she was practicing. Ultimately it stopped her from completing her training.
