Something of a trivial matter but does anyone know of any shops that will PAT test a single item for you then and there if you take it to their site?

The ones I have found so far mainly want to come onsite and do multiple items.

No, why?

Its for work, we recently had everything PAT tesed and this item is a new addition. They won't pay for someone to come and test this one item.

Obviously when I say shop I mean somesort of eletrical shop.

Seriously, just don't bother. Just check you have got the correct fuses, and that theere are no breaks/splits in any cables. It's all health and safety bks.

Thats a very uninformed and useless comment! Health and saftey aves lives and exists because Muppets ignore the basics.

OP we have an Electrician that does all our kit, and we are due for renewal within the next 3 weeks.

Pop your item over to us and i'll get him to do it for you and issue seperate cert, probably be about a fiver, as he will give us discount on the amount of gear we have.

I would hardly say I was ill-informed, and that it was an ill informed comment. You probably also think that when you get a maccy D burger that it hasnt been flobbed in.
I used to be fairly heavily involved in PAT testing, 50% of the time a device would not be correctly PAT tested according to the fluffy H&S exec. I knew of guys recruited, given 10 mins training, given a PAT tester and a few rolls of stickers and told to go testing

H&S is bks but its kinda important if you are using electrical appliances in the workplace. I know any old monkey can fit a sticker to a plug but at the end of the day thats your MOT for that appliance and your insurance if it causes injury. Just to reiterate my point, H&S is bks. I hate it but its a neccessity unfortunately!

I was involved in a company that PAT tested over 1000 appliances a day(IT equipment), probably had less than a .25% fail rate, thats when the testers could be bothered to test the appliances correctly. It's a very, very boring job, a lot of equipment wasn't correctly tested. Part of the reason I parted company from the company, I didnt agree with what was going on. There is big money to be made in bulk testing, even bigger money when you rush the job and don't test correctly. The reason I say it's fluffy bks, is because when was the last time a household got PAT tested? The average home is more likely to burn down through faulty devices than your average corporation.

As an employer you don't have to PAT test. Some companies and insurance companies insist, but is not the law.

We do an annual visual inspection of every item with a plug and record that fact.
Also everyone knows they need to inform us if there are any exposed wires etc seen in between inspections.

That's all you have to do.

Great job creation scheme IMO.

The majority of clients were the civil service and MOD, now that did not surprise me, as Government funded institutions were capable of wasting tax payers money very efficiently.

TBF, last time we had a PAT test they found one of the daily used item to be dangerous - it could have electrocued someone at anytime!

Yeah, we used to tell our customers that too. Chances of death through 240V is very slim. Usually the RCD would cut off the power.

What ever peoples views are.......... YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED to work on regulated sites without PAT tested equipment, whilst its not law it is a requirement to be able to use your tools for work.

I am not willing to get embroiled in the H=S subject but will say it is this anal, because slap happy larry's of the world causing themselves harm by stupidity have created the ballache of H+S requirements.

It is bullst but it saves lives!
