Classic Carnage

Nooo... Morris Oxfords amongst cars to be trashed next week

Spedeworth International will be giving classic car lovers nightmares next week. The Goldie Oldie Night (open to pre-1970 Bangers) takes place at Wimbledon Stadium on Sunday May 16th at 6pm.

The classics that have reached the end of the road (and are well beyond the point of reasonable restoration!) will be racing in two categories, under 1800cc and above 1800cc. No Jaguar XJ Series will be allowed on the night, so those who restore old Jags can rest easy. However, lovers of the big American cars may want to avoid the Wimbledon area as the giant pre-1970 freeway cruisers are eligible to compete.

Classic British iron will also be in attendance, as drivers raid barns, sheds and scrap yards the length of the land to locate the last remaining Austin Cambridges, Morris Oxfords and Humber Hawks to take to the track and head for the scrap yard in the sky in a blaze of glory.

Awards will be presented to the Oldest, Rarest and Best Prepared cars, which has led to some very interesting classics appearing at Plough Lane on Golden Oldie Night. Naturally their status as classics cuts little ice with the drivers and it is not too long before they are reduced to scrap metal.

I love classic cars myself, but if nobody can be bothered to restore one, why moan when it gets used for banger racing!? At least it makes the remaining few more valuable! Most racers make their spare parts available to restorers anyway.

This is great stuff to watch. The drivers don't "destroy" their cars they just re-shape them . Best part of these events are the caravan races. Afterwards, there's mostly nothing left of the trailers, very funny.

Now that's another thing - caravans do deserve this treatment!

why are Jag XJs banned though ? Too fast, too rare ? seems a bit hypocritical banning one particular make.

Why are pre 70's XJ's banned, well, would not be much fun if half the field broke down before the race started.

Well they'd probably destroy every other car there, thus giving them an unfair advantage

I remember years ago when in addition to caravans (best thing for them) they had cars going round in pairs chained together. Wonderful fun. Usually BMC Farinas because of their strength. Does anyone remember this and is it still happening??

Spedeworth still run the chained pairs at Wimbledon on the last meeting of the season before the summer break - no more Farinas though! They also have reverse racing (first bend major pile up of course) and the truly mental Siamese racing with a Metro perched on top of a Sierra. The nutter on top steers the thing and the equal nutter on the bottom does the gas and brakes This one has to be seen to be believed.
