Can you live on a canal boat all year round? do you have to keep moving or can you stay?

I think it depends on the planning permission for the mooring.

So, in short - maybe!

You need 'residential' moorings if you want to stay in one place.

You may have to pay Council Tax too.

But you can always tell a boat that's lived on - they're invariably scruffy with bicycles, logs and bags of rubbish scattered around, and the roof covered with gro-bags, solar panels, assorted garden ornaments and TV aerials.

Yes you can if you have the right type of mooring and licence. You get permanent moorings which you have to pay for. If there aren't any around you can sometimes get a Cruising licence, which means you need to keep moving all the time and there is a limit to how long you can spend in any one place. If you start infringing the limit and sitting on overnight moorings for weeks on end (as people used to do around here until I grassed them up to British Waterways) then when BW find out they will move you on and may revoke your licence.

Would I want to live on a canal boat? God no.
