I'm more tempted by varnish to make them harder wearing and not have to repeat the waxing regularly.

Anyone got any experience of varnishing them - i.e. did you stain or wax first to give a better colour?

Personally I'd much prefer to see a wax finish or maybe some Danish oil.

Plain oak?

All you'll ever need is 2 or 3 coats of OSMO oil.

Doesnt wax and oil attract dust and grubby marks? The house is being renovated so there's going to be some dust knocking around - is a waxed or oiled door easy to wet wipe?

Not with the Osmo stuff...dries lovely and looks great. I've used it on exotic wood, oak and pine and it'll be going on my oak front door once i get the time and some warmer weather.

Is OSMO much different than Danish oil? I've used that on a door before and got pretty good results
