Hello fellow PHers!

I'm breaking my lurking about to ask you all for some assistance. I know this has probably been done before, but I've found an Evo X FQ360 to replace my Focus RS Mk2 - Currently insured with Privilege, for circa £1500pa.. They can't insure me on the Evolution for reasons they wouldn't tell me (I assume power for my age).

The irritating thing is I've been driving for 4 years coming up to 5 (Had my licence since 17 but started driving late), no claims made out ever, even whilst in Germany (Based in the Army out there for 6years) or back in the UK too, only ever really hammered it in locations such as Brands Hatch etc, and the insurers I've spoken to so far have said I'm un-insurable?

Surely there are some intelligent insurers that go on driving history instead of just blackwalling straight away? I've worked hard so far to progress up through the ranks in both the Army (to fuel my Petrolhead addcition) and cars (Power, Displacement, Delivery type), with my Astra VXR nurburgring coming when i was 21, my RS when i was 23, Now I'm looking at going away on Operational Tour again and rewarding myself with an Evolution X FQ360 (So i'll be 24 when it comes to fruition). At the moment, it looks like a full year will be the penalty for me being a good, safe, petrolhead, instead of a boy racing, bad taste modifying idiot who risks everyone on the road. So as I see it I'm being stereotyped when my history is far from the Barrys!

So fellow PHers. Help me out, if you know of any company/any body that'll fit the criteria above, and insure a hardworking, Army Corporal of 24 years of age (yes, I'm flying, I'm not a technician, hard graft wins prizes all the way), so he can actually achieve his aim... Please pipe up!!!

I've tried Adrian Flux, they haven't come back to me yet, which is usually bad news, I'm speaking to Kieth Michaels Insurance and Premium Choice at the moment and awaiting call backs to be processed.

Thanks in advance,

Marf

Firstly, at 23 regardless of history, NCB etc, you will get bumraped for insurance on an EVO.

Secondly, try A-Plan, Sky, Chris Knott.

Join the MLR. There is a club insurer on there, Pace Ward I think.

Sorry, but I just can't see it happeneing.

We're all convinced that were the most responsible, lowest risk driver on the road, will never crash, and insurance is an annoying inconvenience to remain legal. In fact, it doesn't matter if we ARE all of the above, it about grouped risk.

Let's break down the facts and see where we get:

It's an EVO. Strike one. They're incredibly high performance and they get crashed a lot.

You're 24 and male. Strikes two and three. Your peers crash a lot, and tend to have bigger accidents costing more to sort out.

Your in the army. Strike four. Not only do your colleagues tend to crash more (driving after/during long exhausting operations, a slightly risk-loving core nature) but you spend long times away, making your car at more risk of theft.

I'm not saying it's impossible - try owners clubs for advice, try specialist brokers, phone EVERYONE you can think of... I do howver believe that I'd anyone is willing to rake you on, the premium will look more like a mortgage and will make te car impossible for you to enjoy.

This may all change at age 25 however - it's the first big step down in risk. Try asking for an indication if you will be insurable then in similar circumstances. It could have to wait to be a 25th birthday present....

I'm wondering if your occupation may be having an influence. I know that when I was working for Churchill's many moons ago different occupations carried different associated risks calculated, iirc, based on stress, amount of time on road etc.

Not sure if it still makes a difference these days (would be interesting to see if the situation is different if you put yourself down as a customer services advisor).

Sorry I can't offer anything of more use.

First of all congratulations for owning a brand new Focus RS at 23. Especially a blue one. They're awesome.
Secondly don't buy an Evo X FQ360 as they're too soft and too heavy, instead buy the last proper Evo, the IX FQ360.
Thirdly good luck with insurance. Try Admiral or Elephant, I had a P1 at 25 and bought my Evo at 26 and they were the cheapest by a mile but it maybe different for under 25s.

Only things to suggest is the usual comparison websites or adding parents to policy etc etc.

I know what you mean though. With RAC for 3 years paying £1500 fully comp. Got a letter saying my renewal quote breaches the £5k per year barrier so they are unable to continue insuring me from 28th March.

Asked why and im told 'you are high risk on a poweful car' by the girl. I explained ive been on the same car for 3 years (2.0L Mondeo, really a performance car eh??) and all thats changed is that im 3 years older and have 3 years no claims... 'nothing i can do' is the reply!

+1 for Pace Ward. I insured my Evo IX GT (import) for £1250 fully comp at 25, and had little history of performance vehicles...good luck, and I hope you get it sorted. Makes a change to hear about someone working hard to earn an opportunity to drive an Evo.

Could try Footman James, being a member of an owners club usually makes a difference.

To the OP, i have no useful info regarding insurers except that i had a friend who managed to insure a Ferrari, Porsche 911 and a Porsche Cayenne when he was in his mid 20's, so it can be done.

Also, i'd like to pay my respects to you for your chosen career path!

Admiral were quite low for me. Customer service is acceptable too, which is rare for an insurer.

I do like how you're complaining about being stereotyped on the one hand then stereotyping "barry" on the other.

Few years ago I phoned my specialist broker about the possibility of getting insured on an Evo 6 or newer. As soon as I mentioned this he said 'have you had one for a year already?'

'No' says I.

'Don't even bother then, all our under writers won't entertain the idea until you're 25 or have owned one for a year already without stuffing it.'

They're just such a huge risk, many of them don't want to know.

Good luck in your search.

Pace Ward seemed very nice!

Time for Hilarity!

Premium Choice "We Specialise in Young Drivers on High performance cars"
....they should add "And rinsing them for insurance"

£7500 PA!!

Chris Knott

£9000

Still digging around for more quotes, Hopefully PW come up trumps! Failing that, I'll simply delay the Evo for a year and get one on my Birthday instead. Take the sensible approach!

Thank you guys, any more updates I get I'll post, even if it's just to make you laugh at the amount of money they ask!

Unless you are a footblaller or something its just not worth paying premiums like that for any car, at what point does the premium come down - 24? 25?
