Replacement Engines - What are the rules / regs

Hoping for some worldly PH wisdom. I'm looking at a car tomorrow with a view to buying it, that has just had a replacement engine put in. I'm not concerned as to the workmanship of those putting the engine in (they're top notch, honest people), and am happy the engine is of good calibre.
The need for the replacement engine was the bottom end had gone, and so was replaced by the engine from a car that had been rear-ended.
My question is regards the paperwork. The engine is a like for like swap, no upgrades, capacity change etc etc. So who needs to know? DVLA, Insurance, changes on the V5C? What happens with VIN numbers not matching?

VIN number relates to the car not the engine.
There will be an engine number stamped on a plate riveted onto the engine, which correlates to the engine number on the V5 (different to the VIN number) all they would have needed to do is enter the new number on the V5 and send it off, DVLA return V5 with new number - so if you can see the enging plate (not easy on modern cars!) then check it matches.
I've heard the DVLA are asking for evidence and stuff now, which if you've done it yourself is not easy to provide, so I have, heard of "people" simply drilling the rivets off the engine number plate and riveting the old plate onto the replacement engine. Hey presto everything matches, DVLA don't need to be involved, everyone is happy.
No problems with anything else.
