I'm turning 21 in June and fancy a new car have 15k tops to spend the less the better tbh,
I'm looking for something quick around200bhp
57 plate onwards I have a private plate
Will need to be practical to an extent, so no stripped out racer but I do intend to do some track days in it tho
I test drove a fiat 500 abarth and it was great but looks a little bit girly
Top of my list is a corsa vxr
Not keen on the clio200

Oh and before anyone says save my money etc, I have and this won't put me in any financial problems

I know this will sound rude, but forget the fact you have a private plate which will dictate the age of the car you buy. 15K will get you some fantastic older stuff than a basic 'hot hatch' which you are suggesting - e.g. boxster, S2000, even 911 (assuming insurance doesn't kill you).

I'd be after something older and more interesting than hot hatch stuff, as above.

I was looking at Clio 197s and polo GTIs bit decided to spend the same money on an A3 3.2 that was only 4 years old.

15k will get you an immense car. Don't spunk it on a supermini with a big engine, get something interesting.

I'm in a similar situation but I've been looking at BMW 6 series. Haven't had a test drive in one yet though as I'm waiting till July to change so no idea what they're like.

Big and fairly powerful though, and it will be my "sensible" car in fairness.

+1.

Have you really looked at what is out there for this money. Bundles of 911s, Ferrari Mondials, Escort Cosworth, all with well over 200BHP and all in another league to a VXR.

21 and insuring an S2000, Boxster or 911. Really?

For reference, I got one of my chaps at work who is 22 (albeit with only 3 months driving under his belt) to see how much it would cost to insure him on my Subaru. The cheapest? £22,000.

I think you are having a laugh suggesting those cars.

I got quoted £2,500 on an Impreza STi. I'm 19 with 2 years no claims.

Just saying, it is possible. So much more to think about than age.

S2000 comes to about £2000 (just checked).

Well for that reg of car you could get a Honda Civic Type R. 197bhp IIRC. That was on my list a long with Ford Focus ST-3, Seat Leon Cupra R and the winner Astra VXR. I have good main dealer back up and loved how aggressive the car is. Although still not sure if i made the right choice between the type r. I did also look at Clio 197 f1 cups but there were a few things that worried me. Replacement seat covers £300 each, apparently these wear easily. Also window seals apparently are weak. The Renault main dealer was completely unreasonable with prices on parts on service, i thought Renault had stopped over charging in the UK. But all cars have problems, my Astra has already blown a gearbox. So make sure you do your research on the car. Do you want a turbo car or just NA? Theres a lot more that can go wrong with a turbo car.

There are older cars out there at a similar budget like someone else suggested the Honda S2000. I looked at this before but insurance on this for anyone under 25 was unreasonable. Same as the Lotus Elise.

I've had my Boxster for nearly 2 years now and I've just turned 22.

I think you will struggle to insure a 911, you will probably be able to insure an S2000. But a 987 2.7 Boxster will be no problem. With 4 years NCB and my mum and eldest sister as named drivers, I paid around £1k last year with Bell.

I know S2000 cost a bomb to insure.

But if you really want to use your private plate, I would go for a Clio Sport. Be prepared to loose a fair bit of your money though in any of them.

A mk1 Focus RS would get my vote if you weren't that bothered about your plate but wanted a hatchback.

As I pointed out in my post (which you obviously missed) 'assuming insurance doesn't kill you'. I can assure you I am not having a laugh. All I meant was you can get some more interesting cars than a hot hatch. Dare I say MX-5 as well? If you do your research, insurance is not necessarily a killer - a larger engined car can often be cheaper than a typical 'young persons' car.

OK, I'm 39, but in the dim and distant past in the late 80's (when insurance truly went mad on hot hatches), me and friends had things like RS2000's, 124 Abarths, 914/6, 924S etc insured for only a very small premium over GTi's). Slightly older cars, more fun. it can be done, and you get a car that won't depreciate like a rocket.

Don't spend £15k on a car at 21. £5k could get you in something nice and you could spend the rest on carbonated soft drinks and a lot of key positions in attacking and defensive play.

For my 21st birthday I bought a TVR Tuscan that is by far my favorite of all the cars I've owned thus far even if it did end up in a field after only 4 months. There is nothing that comes close to the thrills of that car for the money and is the scariest car I've driven thus far as well.

You could try a 944 S2 RWD but great balance. Not quite enough bhp to be properly scary for 21 and you will get one for 6 - 8k and so have change for insurance ?

Just an idea.

i wouldnt entertain something like a clio for that kind of money i would be different and buy a classic which also has cheaper insurance .

some of the cars i have owned and regret selling

bmw m535i e28 was minyt and regret not been able to find one as clean

honda s2000 enjoy driving it and you have to work for it

toyota ae86 inported from japan get a decent one and you wont lose money on it well unless you bin it .

am under 25 and got insurance easisly on all of these cheaper than i can on a new car .

i prefer cars that i feel like am driving and hate new cars with all this electric power steering and rest of gubbins .

am sure plenty of other pistonheads will agree some of the best cars are the old ones and sure am not alone when comes to regreting selling something

Why do you prefer the Corsa over the Clio 200? The Clio is a much nicer, better looking car and would murder the Corsa on track days.

Thats what I was wondering too, other than being turbocharged, I can't think of one field where the Corsa is clearly better than the Clio.
