i've been trying to buy a new car for a month now and all i come across is a****es with attitude.

from a big branch dealer who walked to the managers office 10 times to "crunch numbers" whilst holding us there for 2 hours and then trying to show a powerpoint presentation.

to the small independant who left me 4 weeks waiting for the car and then came out with the line "we pick our customers as much as they pick us" when i phoned up to cancel!

i might just get the bus!

It's very odd.
Had Ford phone me last week (the dealer I got the ST from):

Salesman: "Hello Lawsome, are you happy with the car you've had for one and a half years now or were you thinking of changing?"
Me: "So strange you should phone sir. I'm starting a new venture, so looking to drop my payments and get something a little less wallet heavy. I like MK3 MX5s"
Salesman: "Gosh golly, wouldn't you know, we have an MX5 in at the moment in a nice grey colour!"
Me: "What a stroke of luck my good man. Do tell me more!"
Salesman: "You know, it's just arrived, i'll have to look into it"
Me: "Great, check it out and give me a phone back and we can discuss it further"
Salesman: "Fantastic, you are a gentleman - speak soon!"

Still no call. I checked the car out on their website. It's what I had in mind and is still for sale. It was on a plate for him.
Car salesman can either be very good or very weird.

Well, the spotty little pr*ck who insulted me last summer at a well-known West-end franchise, is still there as of this morning...

I know the feeling, car dealers these days generally seem to be rubbish, but there are some out there. ...

Went to look at a lexus a while back, despite phoning ahead, killermont in Glasgow wasted two hours of my time faffing around getting me a trade in price (despite my repeated efforts to say I didn't want to trade my old car), then had the cheek to tell me that he didn't think I was serious, so it was too much hassle for him to get the car out of it's space on the forecourt for a test drive (one car in front of it??)

I now have the same spec, in better condition and a much better history from the lexus main dealer. They've been great to deal with, absolutely delighted with the service so far, simple things like just being polite should be the norm, surely?
(night and day better than any of the Mazda dealers I dealt with when I had the rx8)

Kef.

I don't really like dealer-bashing but sometimes they do invite it, I experienced the same myself last week.

Went into Taggarts Land Rover in Glasgow, spent a good half hour with the wife looking over their demo Freelander 2, in and out of it, opening and closing doors, sitting in every seat, managed to leave without so much as an acknowledgement that I even existed.

Thought sod it, I'll go over to Shields Land Rover on the southside of Glasgow, they have three Freelander 2 demos in the showroom, again, spent a good 30 minutes poking around them, and again, left the showroom without so much as seeing a salesman on the floor.

Both times I drove up in a reasonably decent car, was well dressed (went straight from work so still in shirt/tie and suit) and was obviously interested, I certainly don't think I'd have looked like a time-waster. I've decided I'll tout my business over the phone to dealers down south and cheapest price wins, as service from local dealers sure doesn't.

Strange, i went into the Landrover dealer in maryhill last summer in my works clothes, it had pink letters on the back for added effect. I had a salesman at me within 1 minute or 2.
Luck of the draw?

He must be ghey too! (Old, crippled guy starts hobbling towards the horizon as fast as his weak body and stick will go before youthful Airdrieonian kicks said stick away causing pitiful collapse of frail bloke)

Any Arnold Clark dealer

Too interested in pushing the "batch" of cars they have to sell rather than lowering themselves to let you pick what you want from manufacturers (massive) stock.
Last car I bought wss any car from a three page list from Uncle Arnolds stock but, suck of teeth, three months for that spec sir

Was 6 days from an independent franchise dealer Oh and cheaper too

Interesting. I had exactly the same experience in both Garages just before Christmas when I was in - I too wasn't looking particularly scruffy!

Im not usually in the habit of naming and shaming, but the dealer this post is generally about deserves this.

Mckinnon and costello or internet cars edinburgh were the dealer in question, the ones who basically told me im not worthy to own the vehicle after leaving me 5 weeks to replace a component in the stereo, whilst leaving the finance running. Eventually pulling out after being told i was not worthy i was told the finance was all canceled and the deposit refunded. Imagine my surprise today to have a phone call from the finance company letting me know my first payment would come off in 7days!!!! They never spoke to the finance company. Neither have they returned any of my phone calls.

Im staggered by the lack of service from these guys, the only ones that came out shining are the finance company who are going to pursue the cash on my behalf from the dealer.

Still hunting about for a car, travelled hundreds of miles last week looking at various cars, being blatantly lied to over the phone by dealers, does the car have any rust or body damage is quite a simple question, its amazing the amount of dealers who lie and then when you turn up you find the car is riddled with it!

Had the same issue when looking for a replacement 4x4. Walked away from VW after getting crap service when I was looking to spend about 35k on a tiguan. Ended up by a volvo xc60 r-design from arnold Clark in Aberdeen, salesman was really helpful and went out of his way to get a demo car arranged.

Never heard of them but thanks for the heads up. Do appear to be a bit of a shoddy outfit too.
