Be advised that California Route 1 has a section closed indefinitely due to a big landslip. You'll have to go inland for a bit. frown

Coming up from the south should be no problem, Big Sur proper is all north of Hearst Castle. I never went there but drove past on my way down from SF.

I'm intensly jealous, Hearst was the highlight of the 6 state, 6000 mile, 3 week road trip I did in 2009
It's worth the flight all on its own and I am determined to return.

If you've not been before, you must do Tour 1 (the basic initiation tour) without it, the other tours will mean little and it also includes the video in the welcome centre.
(don't dismiss this video, see it before you do the tour if you can, it is nearly worth the admission on its own, if you have SWMBO with you, ensure kleenex are present, she will need them)

The second tour is a bit more down to personal choice, personally I would do either tour 3 or the evening tour (both if you can)

Remember to book tickets in advance, they sell out quickly at busy times.
You can get them through the website at www.hearstcastle.com

Enjoy your tours, I can't recommend the place enough!

It's amazing how far in advance they book up, even off-season.
I went at the start of May, booked my tour in March and it was touch and go then!

If you want some other ideas of things to do in the area, I did a trip report of the whole trip at

http://www.roadtripamerica.com/forum/showthread.ph...

Hearst Castle is on page 5, but it was a circular trip so the earlier pages might be relevant as well!

What dates are you out there Steve? We're out there same time by the sound of it, flying in to LAX. Do I have to buy a PH t-shirt and try for a spotted? winkhehe

By the sound of it I need to get booking Hearst Castle tour tickets.

Spooky! 6th to 20th here (not on the Virgin flight back by chance?). Looking at Hearst about the 12th.
