A seller wants to include a private plate in the sale of a car I'm interested in. The car is around £20K over priced IMHO. The plate BAF7A, so intended to read BAFTA. Both the car and the plate were allegedly owned by Andrew Lloyd Webber although this may be b
ks.

put it on ebay with no reserve - thats the only way to tell a true price of a private plate - or get him to put it on ebay with no reserve and then bid him for what it ends up at!!! No way £20k thats for sure - i would say £5k max if you get the right person on the right day etc etc but thats doubtful

It is the Phantom you're thinking of and I do reckon it's worth £100k but no more. I've been told that a couple with less desirable colours and higher milages have gone for somewhere in the £90Ks. To my knowledge, there hasn't been one sold for under £90K. If the plate is only worth £5K then he's well out on the price. I'll see how much he his willing to let the car go for without the plate.yeah offer him a price without the plate - don't fall in to the trap i have a couple of times and give in and have the private plate as well as the car with the view to sell the plate (which you never do) and then never get a return on the plate when you sell on the car with it still on!!! i mean its a hell of a car and one in the 'right' colours - i have never looked seriously in to service/parts/consumables of Phantoms but like all cars of that sort i guess the more that has been replaced/up to date service/new tyres the better as i'm assuming they are not cheap. They seem to have had their depreciation hit by now but it is still a 8 year old car!!! I always remember a client of mine wanting to buy a new one when they first came out. What put him off was that the dealer would not give him a guaranteed buy back price in 12 months time - not even 50% of the original price!!! Think it was a case where they really didn't know where they would be with them £ wise 12 months on. (of course it was assumed that no more than 10,000 miles etc etc)

Thanks - good advice. I guess if the plate had any real value, he would have took it off the car and sold it already. This car was apparently registered in November 2004 so it's 6 years, 4 month sold but I do get your point. I came very close to buying a new one about a year ago but I just couldn't get my head round the money. Today, a new one costs well over £300K. It's a great car but I would only spend that sort of money on proper super cars as that's where my real passion lies.I guess there is only so far they can fall right? It's still the current model and with no replacement in sight for at least the next 3 years, I would hope there's not much to lose depreciation wise.
I think the seller probably thinks that the plate is 'worth' more when it is sold on that kind of car. Rolls Royce/movie stars/musicians etc etc. I think it is Lloyd Webbers old car so it all makes sense. Point taken about its age and that yes its probably going to be worth £90k for the next 2-3 years and then after that its always going to be worth £60-70k in my opinion so yes its the right thing to do £ wise. As i keep telling myself if you only paid £100k then the most you can lose is £100k. If you paid £300k then the most you can lose is £300k - a simple way of looking at it and you adjust to whatever level you are comfortable with. I love the cars but it simply doesn't have enough seats to get all my mob in!!! I have been looking at the frog eyed/facelifted arnage t's for around £50-60k and up to a max of 25,000 miles, I think they also represent fantastic value at the moment. I also have the problem that I have to force myself to sell something in order to get anything else at the moment as things are not great financially, so am also more conscious of what I am going to do in on them also!!!

Agree that an Arnage represents fantastic value at the moment. At the money you're talking about, there's bundles to choose from too. What would you have to chop in to get in to the Bentley?F458 said:

Coincidentally, I just got rid of my 07 Rangie last weekend. Mine was a Vogue with 49,000 miles on. I chopped it in for a new 11 plate 4.4 Autobiography (fantastic BTW)I got £28K for mine.

Put it this way.
PT37 would be worth £1,500 to me as it means nothing to me, but if you replaced PT with my initials then it would be worth 3/4/5 times that to me.

It's interesting because on the one hand, he will want to over emphasise the value of the plate to try and convince me that it's a good deal but on the other hand, the more valuable he purports the plate to be, the more I'll want to not take it. I'll call up Monday and let you know the outcome.Put it this way.
