Painting gel coat requires a lot of preparation, because the surface may and usually does have a lot of minute holes which will appear as pin pricks in the finished paint work. Much surface filling and flatting will be needed. This is compounded by the fact that if the painted car is put in an oven to cure, air bubbles in the gel coat my force themselves through the finish. Often this means that following initial prep, a grey coat is flashed on and put through the oven to tease out any sub surface imperfections. Then more filling flatting and then finish colour work.Gel coat on the other hand, is many times thicker than paint, and quite deep marks can be polished out.
With regards to the colour; it's always a personal thing but in homage to the previous owner, how about really bright white with a diamond glitter stripe and a moustache over the grille
Perhaps start off with a two tone?
Anyway, providing there isnt much crows feet or tiny holes it shouldnt be a problem. I would just key it with 400 wet then put a decent etch or sealer over it then start with the proper primer. I would close off all holes and imperfections before that though obviously. Go over the thing properly and see if there are any issues with it.

Having chosen a reto style car you will do it an injustice if you go away from colour schemes that were used in the period it represents. The ivory or old English white is just right.
If you do paint then it must be well preped and etch primed or all your efforts will just peel off.

hi 400 have only seen one of these in the uk, any one know if there are many more around?
My thoughts are as you say old white. as the colour.
Great looking car Please post some more photos when you have the paint job.
I had few kit cars in recent years but never seen one of these in the flesh.
Having spoken with some friends overseas, believe a good early mk1 Madison is hard to find and have a very good following and thus hold values very well. Hope the paint job is good. please pm me with more info as would be very keen to see her in the flesh, maybe a goodwood meeting ??
