Go to the post office asap, they have a system where it can be sent securely to dvla - I've just done this myself. It still takes 3 weeks to come back, so technically you will be breaking the law however, you have to send your old licence back to the dvla to be updated so will thus be unable to produce if required (ie for a hire car).
Not much else that can be done really. You're at the mercy of Swansea I guess.

Is it your licence that expires or your photograph,there is not much that you can do at this late stage apart from send it off and hopefully it should be back for when you return from holiday.
If you need your licence for holiday ie to rent a car etc then you might be able to contact DVLA and ask them if they have a fast track system like they do for passports or if you can keep it until after your holiday.
Either way you will never know if you dont ask,good luck and dont forget to send off your £20.00 if its for a photograph renewal.

Little tip. If you go to the Post Office to update the photo, it costs £20 ish and you have to give in your licence. Alternatively, if you go to the post office to update the photo and have "lost" your licence then it costs exactly the same.
I would advise you to go to the Post Office sans licence to update the photo- At least then you have a paper licence to use on holiday if you want to hire a car or something...

Your entitlement to drive is unaffected. If you send off your licence tomorrow but retain proof of your entitlement (a copy)then i don't see a problem. Hire companies may get a bit awkward if that is what you are worried about. There is a DVLA number you can call to verify your entitlement 09061 393837. Bit pricy though!
Give the DVLA a call in the morning, you won't be on hold long before some extemely happy and helpful welsh person solves all your problems instantly (maybe).

So if I head to the post office tomorrow morning, with my photo card. Get a new photo, not hand over my counter part and keep my fingers crossed that might work?
I assume they send it there and then to the DVLA and the best I can do is hope that it arrives in time. In the worst case gamble that they will allow me to have the car on the counterpart or let the wife drive?

It's utterly stupid that they've incorporated an 'expiry' date into it with the introduction of a photo. It doesn't need a picture, we already have passports for photo ID.
Remove the picture, abolish the expiry date. It's making work for the sole purpose of extracting yet more money from drivers every few years.

Passports expire in 10 years, the same as driving licences... and just because you drive doesn't mean you have a passport (and vice versa). It's understandible but it should be a nil-cost exercise rather than £20 + £4.50 from the PO to have it sent with any semblance of chance of it not being lost.Remove the picture, abolish the expiry date. Go to the Post Office with your details- Do NOT take any part of the licence, the photocard will be the most important bit for hiring abroad.I assume they send it there and then to the DVLA and the best I can do is hope that it arrives in time. So what will I need to take, seeing as I've lost my license? Passport, proof of address? The website only says this:Post Office website said:

You should have got a reminder about 2 months ago so not much excuse to only just notice. Fill the form in and tick the lost licence bit and send it off 1st class. It may be back by the end of the week or the end of next month depending on luck but I wouldn't trust the post office to do anything except lose it.jagracer said:
