Try typing in lower case as its really annoying reading in capitals.

Sounds like the SMG pump is on its way out. These are coming upto 10 years old now so I'm expecting more to appear due to wear rather than premature failure. I imagine the pump is having trouble maintaining pressure and as such it triggers the light sometimes. You might get away with leaving it but if it were me I'd replace it as if it lets go entireley you'll be stranded and then forced to buy another.

I would be looking at the temp sensor in the pump before looking at replacing the pump. If this only happens when hot it could be the sensor has failed rather than the pump unit

I dont know the cost off the top of my head, give bmw a call. They are not expensive compared to the pump unit. Also you may lose some pump fluid if you do decide to try the temp sensor and so budget for a litre of that too

I always thought a new pump was more than this. Which dealer did you get the quote from?
